Dans cet article, je propose une analyse critique de la réponse des trois principaux théoriciens de l'interculturalisme majoritariste – Gérard Bouchard, Jérôme Gosselin-Tapp et Michel Seymour – à la question des minorités internes. Cette question est de savoir comment protéger le droit des minorités religieuses de pratiquer leur religion (tel que créé ou facilité par le multiculturalisme ou l'interculturalisme) sans violer le droit des femmes en leur sein de mener une vie exempte d'oppression (tel que défendu par le féminisme). Je soutiens que la réponse de ces auteurs est ambiguë, en ce sens qu'elle embrasse simultanément deux postures – la fermeté et la flexibilité – qui, lorsque considérées ensemble, sont contradictoires et, lorsque considérées séparément, présentent des problèmes spécifiques. Si dans le cas particulier du foulard islamique, ces auteurs élargissent momentanément leur perspective, leurs arguments à ce chapitre commandent des nuances importantes pour le moment absentes de leur raisonnement.

This research sought to study how women cope with incarceration by exploring the pseudo-family phenomenon in female correctional centres, specifically in Kgoši Mampuru II and Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The study employed a qualitative research approach to investigate the phenomenon. The research participants were selected through non-probability sampling, namely purposive, convenience and snowball methods. At the Kgoši Mampuru II centre, 21 offenders and seven officials were interviewed, while 15 offenders and six officials were interviewed at Johannesburg. In total, 36 offenders and 13 officials, including the two heads, were interviewed from both centres. The researchers chose theories on the sociology of corrections, specifically the deprivation and importation models, due to their suitability to explain the phenomenon under investigation. This study found that: (1) pseudo-families are structures or relationships that resemble families in general society; and (2) female offenders are motivated to join pseudo-families due to the need for protection, the need for belonging and comfort, and for smuggling contraband.

Violence against women in all its forms is the most shameful violation of human rights. It is a violation that continues to increase over the years despite the existence of international and national laws. Morocco is one of the countries in the world that suffers from this discrimination against women. To deal with this phenomenon, national texts intervene to establish a legal framework that respects the principle of equality between women and men such as the Constitution of 2011, The Family Code (“Moudawana”) of 2004, and the adoption in 2016 of Law No. 27-14 on the fight against human trafficking, etc. In 2018, Law No. 103-13 related to the fight against violence towards women was promulgated. It is a law which constitutes a real legislative innovation in Morocco since it will reduce or even stop a certain number of abuses experienced by women. This is what leads us to ask ourselves, is Law No. 103-13 really going to allow us to abolish the segregation between men and women? And would this law allow us to fight against all kinds of violations against women?

In addition to standard parole conditions, parolees under federal community supervision may be subject to special conditions as determined by the Parole Board of Canada; such conditions are intended to manage factors associated with criminogenic risk and need. One set of special conditions places restrictions on parolees’ social relationships and associations, which can include general restrictions (e.g., non-association with individuals involved in crime) or specific restrictions (e.g., no contact with one’s victim or co-accused). Drawing on case files of women under community supervision (n = 43), we explore how non-association and no contact orders shape community release experiences. We suggest that such conditions can have wide-reaching effects on women’s social lives and reintegration (e.g., in the areas of social support, employment, and housing), thereby, at times, complicating women’s attempts to construct post-institutional lives and identities. We consider how association conditions illustrate the broader tension between parole requirements and reintegration.

The Late Iron Age has traditionally been portrayed as an age of swords, Celtic-patterned shields, and bronze cauldrons, a time of warfare, banquets, and raids, mostly starring male warriors. But what do we know about the rest of the population, especially women? Is it possible, based on the same data, to uncover an alternative narrative that includes women? This article focuses on the northern Meseta of Iberia, an area with a long research tradition, in which women are almost invisible in accounts of the Iron Age. Drawing on a range of archaeological and textual evidence, this study brings the roles of women to the forefront, offering a critique of traditional research discourses and a discussion on how Iron Age societies worked from a gender-inclusive perspective.

This article examines the development, handling, and depositions of disc-on-bow brooches from the sixth to tenth centuries ad in the Vendel and Viking periods in Norway and mainland Sweden. A revised typological framework is presented, and the context of these brooches explored. The authors discuss their preservation, re-use, fragmentation, and ritual meaning within ongoing social negotiations and internal conflicts from the late Vendel period into the Viking Age. References to the past in Viking-Age society and the significance of women for maintaining narratives of the past are considered, as are levels of access, control, and definition of narratives of the past in times of social redefinition.

Domestic homicide is the most serious type of violence in a marital relationship, which is punishable by the death penalty as retaliation (Qisas) according to the Penal Code of Iran. The present paper analyzes why a woman commits this crime (the killing of her husband), examining the killer’s status in a marital relationship. Data show that the killers had been victims of domestic violence for 10–25 years. In other words, domestic homicide has a direct relationship with the killer being victimized by domestic violence, including physical (assault and battery), mental (insult and obscenity), sexual and sometimes financial violence that may result from addiction. The most important reason for domestic homicide is the failure to provide legal and social protection for women. This incites hatred for the husband, which arises from repeated victimization in a coercive relationship with the husband. These women cannot end this coercive relationship because of insufficient or unavailable legal, social or family protection. Moreover, the process of divorce for a woman in Iran is quite complex. This article also examines the potential defense of mental capacity and self-defense and its place in the Iranian penal code. Based on this research, this article argues for the need for the legislature to review the death penalty for this kind of crime and to consider other possible responses to such murders.

La consommation de tabac et d’alcool au cours de la grossesse peut augmenter les risques de santé pour l’enfant à court et plus long terme (petit poids de naissance, prématurité, difficultés cognitives et psychologiques) [1–5]. Les facteurs associés, qui incluent les difficultés sociales et économiques des familles (chômage, faibles revenus, absence du conjoint) [6], les difficultés psychologiques [1,7] et les consommations de tabac et d’alcool de l’entourage [1,8], sont mal connus chez les femmes migrantes. Nous avons examiné les facteurs associés aux consommations de tabac (≥ 1 cigarette/jour) et d’alcool (≥ 1 fois; binge drinking) des femmes de la cohorte ELFE en fonction de leur statut migratoire à partir de données recueillies à la maternité en 2011 (n = 18,316).

Les femmes nées en France consommaient plus que celles nées à l’étranger (tabac : 21,9 vs. 8,8 %; alcool : 40,4 vs. 22,9 %) mais les niveaux de binge drinking étaient comparables (3,2 vs. 2,9 %). Les consommations de tabac et d’alcool étaient associées aux caractéristiques démographiques, socio-économiques, de santé, et du père de l’enfant, avec des spécificités en fonction du statut migratoire : chez les femmes nées à l’étranger les consommations d’alcool sont associées aux fait de ne pas vivre avec un conjoint (OR ajusté : toute consommation : 2,20; binge drinking : 3,06); par contre une situation socioéconomique défavorable est associée à un niveau élevé de tabagisme et de binge drinking seulement chez les femmes nées en France. Les niveaux de consommations de tabac et alcool sont faibles lorsque le père de l’enfant est migrant, surtout chez les migrantes.

Au total, pour tenter de diminuer les niveaux de consommation de tabac et d’alcool au cours de la grossesse, les professionnels de santé et de prévention devraient tenir compte de multiples facteurs dont certains varient selon le statut migratoire des femmes.

To effectively address/counter/neutralize the areas in which ISIS/ISIL/IS/DAESH has had success in its strategy, operation and tactics, the international community must deal with the following three issues: (A) multifaceted recruitment counter-efforts; (B) looking at women as survivors of ISIS on a continuum from free agent to victim; (C) the need to investigate and monitor the movement of people with concern and respect for human rights and international treaties. The role of different actors is examined in detail. The need for international efforts and coordination is also addressed. Concrete recommendations are provided. The list of members of the International Task Force that worked on this Conclusions and Recommendations is given.

This paper explores the motivations of Western women who traveled to Syria/Iraq to support the Islamic State (IS) or Daesh. It draws on previous studies of the phenomenon, insights from practitioners and informal interviews with an individual with first-hand insights. The different motivations are categorized into three levels: macro, meso and micro. The author rebukes the intractable stereotype of the “jihadi bride” that (inadvertently) suggests that women are driven mainly by personal motivations or the prospect of marriage, and demonstrates that female Western supporters of IS/Daesh are motivated by various factors. These include ideological or religious motivations, the pull of the cause, frustration and anger over the perceived worldwide oppression of Muslims, but also the search for a purpose in life and for a sense of belonging. Women have been affected by group dynamics and experiences in their past (including sexual abuse). Some women were attracted by the prospect of a clean slate, adventure or a (religious) husband. The author underscores that, in order to tackle the phenomenon of women supporting IS/Daesh, it is essential to deepen our understanding of its appeal on women, which requires acknowledging the diversity of women who joined IS/Daesh and recognizing the complexity and multitude of their motivations.

How to define and protect the dignity of women in armed conflict? This study attempts to understand the issues and dilemmas of the right to dignity and of questions of diversity in international humanitarian law through the example of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The author proposes an alternative approach to the right to dignity, which in international humanitarian law is primarily associated with women's sexuality. This alternative approach would engage more directly with the debates around social diversity that are occluded in times of war.

Among the older population in Canada, the majority of whom are women, incurable cancer is rampant. Having incurable cancer often implies suffering. Studies reveal that communication with one’s circle is therefore often arduous, leading us to believe that it can cause suffering. To our knowledge, there has been no research that specifically explores the suffering related to communication among older women with incurable cancer: this will be the objective of our article.

This exploratory qualitative research is in humanistic psychology. It is based on a phenomenological analysis of the conceptual categories that emerged from 19 semi-structured interviews among 10 women aged 65 years and over with incurable cancer.

The results reveal both the dynamic of silence, desired in order to prevent increased suffering, and sometimes imposed and a source of further suffering. They also reveal that the absence of listening, the imposition of silence, and the minimization of what these women say, also cause suffering. The consequences of disclosing one’s illness and its suffering are also explored.

This study explored middle-aged, university educated women's views of their own future aging, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Seventy-four university graduates, aged 45 to 65, were interviewed about their views of aging and their employment histories. They also completed questionnaires measuring personality, self-efficacy, well-being, depression and social support. Content analysis of interview responses revealed that most women were optimistic about their own old age and expected overall stability in themselves, their financial situation and their relationships, with an improvement in the area of leisure. Positive expectations of stability were associated with satisfaction with oneself and past accomplishments. A typology of accommodation to future aging, derived from the data on women's expectations and preparations, captured four patterns of cognitive, affective and behavioural dynamics. Women with different accommodation types differed primarily on well-being, neuroticism and employment histories.

Feminist methodologies address the purpose and process of the research enterprise. They are not a particular set of techniques or procedures for gathering data. Rather they stem from the realization that it was the experiences of a very particular group of men, as both subject and object of enquiry, that defined social reality and the theories developed to explain our social worlds. This paper discusses some of the principles and approaches used by feminist researchers to explore the realities of women's lives. The author's research on home care workers, along with selected research in the field of aging, are used to illustrate the analysis and explore the implications of feminist methodologies for our understanding of aging in Canadian society.

Substance use patterns and predictors of substance use by women aged 65 and over were examined using data from the Canadian National Alcohol and Other Drugs Survey (1989). Use patterns were consistent with findings from previous surveys: that older women drink less alcohol, smoke less and use less illicit drugs than other age-gender groups. Also consistent with previous surveys, older women reported the highest rate of psychoactive prescription drug use of all groups. Bivariate analyses indicated significant relationships between some social and demographic variables and substance use. Drinking was associated with being single, younger, not religious, in better health, and smoking. Smoking was associated with being younger, not religious, in poorer health, having less social support, drinking, and use of psychoactive prescription drugs. Use of psychoactive prescription drugs (especially sleeping pills) tended to be associated with being widowed, older, less educated, more religious, in poorer health, experiencing higher stress, having lower income and less social support, smoking, and use of other psychoactive prescription drugs. When data were analysed using principal component analysis, two very consistent dimensions of substance use emerged for older women: greater religiosity associated with less drinking and smoking, and a dimension involving use of all types of psychoactive prescription drugs. These findings are discussed in terms of projected use patterns for future older women and the need for a better understanding of the social context of older women's substance use that involves light to moderate alcohol use but a higher rate of use of psychoactive prescription drugs than other age-gender groups.

A review of gerontological literature on elder abuse and feminist literature on wife assault points to the conceptual and practice divisions that have separated attention to age and gender and, thus, obscured older women's experiences of abuse by their male partners. The first person account of a woman who left her abusive husband in her 70s and the supporting observations of a group of concerned service providers are introduced to bridge these conceptual divisions and to call attention to the social processes that hide and perpetuate wife assault in old age. With a view to developing methodologies and practices that make visible and challenge the conditions that sustain abuse of older women, directions for future approaches to research and service are considered.

This paper substantiates many limits to the general thesis which Louise Dulude has popularized under the title: “Old Age: a Women's World”. Using old age sex ratio as an indicator, the author shows that Canada's senior population has been mostly male until recently and still keeps that majority in rural areas and agricultural milieus; one country out of six in the world today and half of 18 main ethnic groups in Ontario in 1971 were mostly male at that age.

It is concluded that one sex prevailing on the other in old age is influenced by many factors: biology, history, migrations, ethnicity, milieu (rural urban) and types of activities.

This study provided an exploratory analysis of key social determinants of health for older Canadian women, with a focus on differences between rural and urban residency, given that socio-economic status (SES) and social capital have been shown to differ by rural–urban residence. Secondary analysis was conducted using the 2000/2001 Canadian Community Health Survey. A comparative logistic regression analysis revealed, unexpectedly, that SES and social capital variables were more strongly associated with the health status of urban older women than for the health status of their rural counterparts. Associations between health status measures and household income, food insecurity, and community belonging were largely not supported among rural women, but were for their urban counterparts. Findings are discussed concerning applications of the social-determinants-of-health model for explaining health patterns among older urban and rural women. Cost of living, access to health services, and dimensions of rural culture are discussed as potential explanations.

This research broadens the understanding of the relationship between paid work and caregiving by including the contribution of the older “care recipient”. Using selected aspects of social exchange theory and a life course perspective, the importance of giving and receiving for caregivers and care recipients is explored through analyses of focus groups with employed women and interviews with their older mothers. The mothers and daughters focus on the time when they are most indebted to each other. The daughter's employment affects the type and value of contributions from care recipients. The mother's past assistance with housework and caring for children is greatly valued by the daughters. For care recipients, however, being reliant on a busy employee for their care has negative consequences. The mothers emphasize the current situation and under-estimate their past helping. Further research should consider the care recipient's perspective to obtain a broader understanding of the impact of the caregiver's employment in caregiving relationships.
