We investigate the relationship between a galaxy cluster’s hydrostatic equilibrium state, the entropy profile, K, of the intracluster gas, and the system’s non-thermal pressure (NTP), within an analytic model of cluster structures. When NTP is neglected from the cluster’s hydrostatic state, we find that the gas’ logarithmic entropy slope, $k\equiv \mathrm{d}\ln K/\mathrm{d}\ln r$, converges at large halocentric radius, r, to a value that is systematically higher than the value $k\simeq1.1$ that is found in observations and simulations. By applying a constraint on these ‘pristine equilibrium’ slopes, $k_\mathrm{eq}$, we are able to predict the required NTP that must be introduced into the hydrostatic state of the cluster. We solve for the fraction, $\mathcal{F}\equiv p_\mathrm{nt}/p$, of NTP, $p_\mathrm{nt}$, to total pressure, p, of the cluster, and we find $\mathcal{F}(r)$ to be an increasing function of halocentric radius, r, that can be parameterised by its value in the cluster’s core, $\mathcal{F}_0$, with this prediction able to be fit to the functional form proposed in numerical simulations. The minimum NTP fraction, as the solution with zero NTP in the core, $\mathcal{F}_0=0$, we find to be in excellent agreement with the mean NTP predicted in non-radiative simulations, beyond halocentric radii of $r\gtrsim0.7r_{500}$, and in tension with observational constraints derived at similar radii. For this minimum NTP profile, we predict $\mathcal{F}\simeq0.20$ at $r_{500}$, and $\mathcal{F}\simeq0.34$ at $2r_{500}$; this amount of NTP leads to a hydrostatic bias of $b\simeq0.12$ in the cluster mass $M_{500}$ when measured within $r_{500}$. Our results suggest that the NTP of galaxy clusters contributes a significant amount to their hydrostatic state near the virial radius and must be accounted for when estimating the cluster’s halo mass using hydrostatic equilibrium approaches.

We investigate the connection between a cluster’s structural configuration and observable measures of its gas emission that can be obtained in X-ray and Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) surveys. We present an analytic model for the intracluster gas density profile: parameterised by the dark matter halo’s inner logarithmic density slope, $\alpha$, the concentration, c, the gas profile’s inner logarithmic density slope, $\varepsilon$, the dilution, d, and the gas fraction, $\eta$, normalised to cosmological content. We predict four probes of the gas emission: the emission-weighted, $T_\mathrm{X}$, and mean gas mass-weighted, $T_\mathrm{m_g}$, temperatures, and the spherically, $Y_\mathrm{sph}$, and cylindrically, $Y_\mathrm{cyl}$, integrated Compton parameters. Over a parameter space of clusters, we constrain the X-ray temperature scaling relations, $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{X}$, within $57.3\%$ and $41.6\%$, and $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{m_g}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{m_g}$, within $25.7\%$ and $7.0\%$, all respectively. When excising the cluster’s core, the $M_{200} - T_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_{500} - T_\mathrm{X}$ relations are further constrained, to within $31.3\%$ and $17.1\%$, respectively. Similarly, we constrain the SZ scaling relations, $M_{200} - Y_\mathrm{sph}$ and $M_{500} - Y_\mathrm{sph}$, within $31.1\%$ and $17.7\%$, and $M_{200} - Y_\mathrm{cyl}$ and $M_{500} - Y_\mathrm{cyl}$, within $25.2\%$ and $22.0\%$, all respectively. The temperature observable $T_\mathrm{m_g}$ places the strongest constraint on the halo mass, whilst $T_\mathrm{X}$ is more sensitive to the parameter space. The SZ constraints are sensitive to the gas fraction, whilst insensitive to the form of the gas profile itself. In all cases, the halo mass is recovered with an uncertainty that suggests the cluster’s structural profiles only contribute a minor uncertainty in its scaling relations.

We investigate the relationship between a dark matter halo’s mass profile and measures of the velocity dispersion of kinematic tracers within its gravitational potential. By predicting the scaling relation of the halo mass with the aperture velocity dispersion, $M_\mathrm{vir} - \unicode{x03C3}_\mathrm{ap}$, we present the expected form and dependence of this halo mass tracer on physical parameters within our analytic halo model: parameterised by the halo’s negative inner logarithmic density slope, $\unicode{x03B1}$, its concentration parameter, c, and its velocity anisotropy parameter, $\unicode{x03B2}$. For these idealised halos, we obtain a general solution to the Jeans equation, which is projected over the line of sight and averaged within an aperture to form the corresponding aperture velocity dispersion profile. Through dimensional analysis, the $M_\mathrm{vir} - \unicode{x03C3}_\mathrm{ap}$ scaling relation is devised explicitly in terms of analytical bounds for these aperture velocity dispersion profiles: allowing constraints to be placed on this relation for motivated parameter choices. We predict the $M_{200} - \unicode{x03C3}_\mathrm{ap}$ and $M_{500} - \unicode{x03C3}_\mathrm{ap}$ scaling relations, each with an uncertainty of $60.5\%$ and $56.2\%$, respectively. These halo mass estimates are found to be weakly sensitive to the halo’s concentration and mass scale, and most sensitive to the size of the aperture radius in which the aperture velocity dispersion is measured, the maximum value for the halo’s inner slope, and the minimum and maximum values of the velocity anisotropy. Our results show that a halo’s structural and kinematic profiles impose only a minor uncertainty in estimating its mass. Consequently, spectroscopic surveys aimed at constraining the halo mass using kinematic tracers can focus on characterising other, more complex sources of uncertainty and observational systematics.

We present the recent discovery of new halo structures in the Milky Way (MW) based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP). HSC is a wide-field imager installed at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope, and a 300-night survey with this instrument is being carried out in this program. The combination of the superb image quality and depth and the fact that it is a multi-band survey allows us to identify new faint satellites as well as field halo stars in the outskirts of the MW halo beyond the reach of previous surveys. We report here on the new insights into the nature of both stellar and dark halos in the MW as revealed from this on-going survey program and show prospects based on the upcoming large spectroscopic survey with Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph.

Cosmological simulations are a powerful tool to test various cosmological and galaxy formation scenarios. The discovery of low surface brightness objects has been a challenge for both of these fields. Our work aims to create a fully reproducible pipeline to generate a realistic dark matter halo catalog with corresponding information on galaxy formation and evolution.

We describe an algorithm that can fit the properties of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of a tidal stream, given the properties of that stream. We show that under ideal conditions (the Milky Way potential, the orbit of the dwarf galaxy progenitor, and the functional form of the dwarf galaxy progenitor are known exactly), the density and angular width of stars along the stream can be used to constrain the mass and radial profile of both the stellar and dark matter components of the progenitor dwarf galaxy that was ripped apart to create the stream. Our provisional fit for the parameters of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of the Orphan Stream indicates that it is less massive and has fewer stars than previous works have indicated.

The stellar disc of the Milky Way exhibits clear departures from planarity, the most conspicuous manifestation being the Galactic Warp but also includes an apparent corrugation pattern in number counts around 15kpc from the Galactic centre, a wave like pattern in the vertical velocities of stars as a function of guiding radius, asymmetries about the midplane in both number counts and bulk motions, and phase spirals in the z–vz projection of the local stellar distribution function. We discuss the physics of these phenomena and, in particular, suggest a possible avenue for inferring the vertical force in the Solar Neighbourhood from phase spirals. We apply Dynamic Mode Decomposition, a technique widely used in the realm of fluid mechanics, to simulations of disc galaxy simulations. This method appears to be particularly well-suited to the study of nonlinear processes such as the coupling of warps and spirals, first discussed by Masset and Tagger.

We study the behaviour of the dynamical and stellar mass inside the effective radius as function of local density for early-type galaxies (ETGs). We use several samples of ETGs - ranging from 19000 to 98000 objects - from the ninth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We consider Newtonian dynamics, different light profiles and different initial mass functions (IMF) to calculate the dynamical and stellar mass. We assume that any difference between these two masses is due to dark matter and/or a non-universal IMF. The main results are: (i) the amount of dark matter (DM) inside ETGs depends on the environment; (ii) ETGs in low-density environments span a wider DM range than ETGs in dense environments; (iii) the amount of DM inside ETGs in the most dense environments will be less than approximately 55-65 per cent of the dynamical mass; (iv) the accurate value of this upper limit depends on the impact of the IMF on the stellar mass estimation.

Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) can create sufficiently large cores in dark matter haloes of dwarf galaxies if the self-interaction cross-section is sufficiently large on scales of dwarf galaxies. Such a large cross-section can be realized without changing the densities and shapes of cluster-size haloes by introducing a velocity dependent cross-section. Lowering the central densities of dwarf-size haloes, however, may change the strength of stellar feedback required to reproduce observed properties of dwarf galaxies such as the luminosity function of the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies. We perform simulations of galaxy formation by employing such a velocity dependent self-interaction cross-section to investigate the coupled effect of SIDM and feedback.

The Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) paradigm makes specific predictions for the abundance, structure, substructure and clustering of dark matter halos, the sites of galaxy formation. These predictions can be directly tested, in the low-mass halo regime, by dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxies. A number of potential challenges to LCDM have been identified when confronting the expected properties of dwarfs with observation. I review our understanding of a few of these issues, including the “missing satellites” and the “too-big-to-fail” problems, and argue that neither poses an insurmountable challenge to LCDM. Solving these problems requires that most dwarf galaxies inhabit halos of similar mass, and that there is a relatively sharp minimum halo mass threshold to form luminous galaxies. These predictions are eminently falsifiable. In particular, LCDM predicts a large number of “dark” low-mass halos, some of which should have retained enough primordial gas to be detectable in deep 21 cm or Hα surveys. Detecting this predicted population of “mini-halos” would be a major discovery and a resounding success for LCDM on small scales.

I discuss the formation of the modern cosmological paradigm. In more detail I describe the early study of dark matter and cosmic web and the role of Yakov Zeldovich in the formation of the present concepts on these subjects.

When analyzing dark matter halos forming in cosmological n-body simulations, it is common practice to obtain the density profile utilizing spherical shells. However, it is also known that the systems under investigation are far from spherically symmetric but, rather, follow a triaxial mass distribution. In this study we present an estimator for the error introduced by spherically averaging an elliptical mass distribution. We systematically investigate the differences arising when using a triaxial density profile under the assumption of spherical symmetry. We show that the variance in the density can be as large as 50% in the outer parts of dark matter halos for extreme (but still credible) axis ratios of 0.55: 0.67: 1. The inner parts are less affected but still show a scatter at the 16% level for these prolate systems. For more moderate ellipticities, i.e. axis ratios of 0.73: 0.87: 1, the error is smaller but still as large as 10–20% depending on distance. We further provide a simple formula that allows estimation of this variance as a function of radius for arbitrary axis ratios. We conclude that highly prolate and/or oblate systems are better fit by analytical profiles that take into account the triaxial nature of cosmological objects.

We present a statistical analysis of the interactions between satellite galaxies in cosmological dark matter halos taken from fully self-consistent high-resolution simulations of galaxy clusters. We show that the number distribution of satellite encounters has a tail that extends to as many as three to four encounters per orbit. On average 30% of the substructure population had at least one encounter (per orbit) with another satellite galaxy. However, this result depends on the age of the dark matter host halo with a clear trend for more interactions in younger systems. We also report a correlation between the number of encounters and the distance of the satellites to the centre of the cluster — satellite galaxies closer to the centre experience more interactions. However, this can be simply explained by the radial distribution of the substructure population and merely reflects the fact that the density of satellites is higher in those regions.

In order to find substructure galaxies we applied (and present) a new technique based upon the N-body code MLAPM. This new halo finder MHF (MLAPM’s halo finder) acts with exactly the same accuracy as the N-body code itself and is therefore free of any bias and spurious mismatch between simulation data and halo finding precision related to numerical effects.

In this contribution a broad overview of the methodologies of cosmological N-body simulations and a short introduction explaining the general idea behind such simulations is presented. After explaining how to set up the initial conditions using a set of N particles two (diverse) techniques are presented for evolving these particles forward in time under the influence of their self-gravity. One technique (tree codes) is solely based upon a sophistication of the direct particle–particle summation whereas the other method relies on the continuous (de-)construction of arbitrarily shaped grids and is realized in adaptive mesh refinement codes.

I summarise recent results on multi-wavelength properties of distant lensed galaxies, with a particular focus on Herschel. Submm surveys have already resulted in a breakthrough discovery of an extremely efficient selection technique for strong gravitational lenses. Benefitting from the gravitational magnification boost, blind mm-wave redshifts have been demonstrated on IRAM, SMA and GBT, and follow-up emission line detections have been made of water, [Oiii], [Cii] and other species, revealing the PDR/XDR/CRDR conditions. I also discuss HST imaging of submm lenses, lensed galaxy reconstruction, the prospects for ALMA and e-Merlin and the effects of differential magnification. Many emission line diagnostics are relatively unaffected by differential magnification, but SED-based estimates of bolometric fractions in lensed infrared galaxies are so unreliable as to be useless, unless a lens mass model is available to correct for differential amplification.

We describe a new method that allows us to quantitatively characterize galactic satellites from analysis of disturbances in outer gas disks, without requiring knowledge of their optical light. We have demonstrated the validity of this method, which we call Tidal Analysis, by applying it to local spirals with known optical companions, including M51 and NGC 1512. These galaxies span the range from having a low mass companion (~ one-hundredth the mass of the primary galaxy) to a fairly massive companion (~ one-third the mass of the primary galaxy). This approach has broad implications for many areas of astrophysics – for the indirect detection of dark matter (or dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxies), and for galaxy evolution in its use as a decipher of the dynamical impact of satellites on galactic disks. Here, we present some preliminary results on the emergent SEDs and images, calculated along the time sequence of these dynamical simulations using the 3-D self-consistent Monte Carlo radiative transfer code RADISHE. We explore star formation prescriptions and how they affect the emergent SEDs and images. Our goal is to identify SED colors that are primarily affected by the galaxy's interaction history, and are not significantly affected by the choice of star formation prescription. If successful, we may be able to utilize the emergent UV-IR SED of the primary galaxy to understand its recent interaction history.

The chemical abundances in the atmosphere of a star provide unique information about the gas from which that star formed, and, modulo processes that are not important for the vast majority of stars, such as mass transfer in close binary systems, are conserved through a star's life. Correlations between chemistry and kinematics have been used for decades to trace dynamical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. I discuss how it should be possible to refine and extend such analyses, provided planned large-scale deep imaging surveys have matched spectroscopic surveys.

During the last decade, the development of more sophisticated surveys allows the exploration of the chemical enrichment of galaxies and their environment at different cosmic times. In this context, it has been suggested that galactic winds play a fundamental role in the regulation of the star formation and the transportation of metals outside the galaxies. In this work, we study the influence of Supernovae winds in the chemical evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium by employing cosmological numerical simulations within a hierarchical Universe. We focus on the origin and evolution of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR).

We analyse the dark matter (DM) distribution in a ≈1012M⊙ halo extracted from a simulation consistent with the concordance cosmology, where the physics regulating the transformation of gas into stars was allowed to change producing galaxies with different morphologies. Although the DM profiles get more concentrated as baryons are collected at the centre of the haloes compared to a pure dynamical run, the total baryonic mass alone is not enough to fully predict the reaction of the DM profile. Our findings suggest that the response of the DM halo is driven by the history of assembly of baryons into a galaxy. The accretion of satellites could be associated with an expansion of the dark matter profiles, triggered by angular momentum transfer from the incoming satellites. However, we also found that these mechanism have different efficiencies which are set by the history of formation of the structure.

The Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) is of fundamental importance for galaxy formation as it provides information about the relation between the baryonic content of galaxies and the depth of their dark halos potential wells. In recent years, it has been possible to study this relation at different redshifts. However, there are still controversies about its origin and evolution. In this work, we try to address the origin of the Tully-Fisher Relation by employing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.
