  • Summary

    When age-related physical impairments affect a person’s performance of functional tasks, rehabilitation may restore function and improve an elder’s independence and participation in society. Included is a review of how to perform a functional assessment, a description of the members of a rehabilitation team, and an introduction to the various settings where an elder can receive rehabilitation. The chapter describes geriatric assistive devices that improve self-care and mobility and reviews specific rehabilitation interventions for common debilitating conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, hip fracture, and lower-extremity amputation.

The chapter investigates the differences between accessibility and reasonable accommodation, in light of the CRPD Committee’s jurisprudence.   • Medical and Everyday Assistive Device Use among Older Adults with Arthritis*

  • This research compared older adults' use of medical assistive devices (ADs) with their use of everyday ADs as a means of managing chronic physical disability. The study also examined whether predisposing, need, and enabling factors were associated with device use in three domains of activity: personal care / in-home mobility, household activities, and community mobility. Participants were 248 adults, aged 55 years and older, with a wide range of disability levels as a result of osteoarthritis. All participants were administered an in-depth, structured questionnaire, as part of a larger study examining older adults' independence and adaptation to chronic physical illness. The results revealed that respondents actively adapted to their disabilities and used a wide range of medical and everyday devices, with everyday devices being reported more than twice as often as medical ADs and the fewest devices overall being reported for community mobility. In general, medical devices were used when subjective and objective need for ADs was considerable. Everyday devices were reported earlier in the trajectory of the disease, at mild and moderate disability levels, and were associated with a broader pattern of adaptation that included planning to avoid problems, exercise, and pacing activities.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the benefits of and barriers to user involvement in medical device technology development and evaluation.

    Methods: A structured review of published literature in peer-reviewed journals was conducted.

    Results: This literature review revealed that the main benefits of user involvement were an increased access to user needs, experiences, and ideas; improvements in medical device designs and user interfaces; and an increase in the functionality, usability, and quality of the devices. On the other hand, resource issues, particularly those of time and money were found the key impediments to involving users in the development and evaluation of medical device technologies. This study also has categorized both the benefits of and barriers to user involvement.

    Conclusions: The involvement of users in medical device technology development and evaluation requires resources, which are limited; however, this involvement is essential from both users and manufacturers perspectives.
