In a multi server queuing system, buffer size is often larger than the number of servers.This necessitates queuing and waiting for some customers. Customers become impatient whilewaiting for service. Additionally, they may also become impatient if service is notoffered at the desired rate. This paper analyses a finite buffer multi server queuingsystem with the additional restriction that customers may balk as well as renege. Closedform expressions of a number of performance measures are presented. A design problem isdiscussed to demonstrate the results derived.

In this paper, a single server finite buffer Markovian queuing system is analyzed with the additional restriction that customers may balk as well as renege. Reneging considered in literature is usually of position independent type where the reneging rate is constant irrespective of the position of the customer in the system. However there are many real world situations where this assumption does not hold. This paper is an attempt to model balking with position dependent reneging. Explicit closed form expressions of a number of performance measures are presented. A typical problem is discussed to demonstrate the usefulness of results derived in the paper.

This paper presents a new technique for analyzing the frequency of a very large class of rare events in large traffic systems. The method is based on the theory of large deviations. If n is a large parameter, typically the number of potential traffic sources, then where I is the solution to an associated variational problem. We present a new analysis of a previously solved system as well as an analysis of a previously intractable system. As by-products of our analysis, we obtain estimates of the transient behavior of the system, and show how they may be used in analyzing some flow control schemes.

We consider a queuing system with several identical servers, each with its own queue. Identical customers arrive according to some stochastic process and as each customer arrives it must be assigned to some server's queue. No jockeying amongst the queues is allowed. We are interested in assigning the arriving customers so as to maximize the number of customers which complete their service by a certain time. If each customer's service time is a random variable with a non-decreasing hazard rate then the strategy which does this is one which assigns each arrival to the shortest queue.

We consider a queuing system consisting of a finite number of identical exponential servers. Each server has its own queue, and upon arrival each customer must be assigned to some server's queue. Under the assumption that no jockeying between queues is permitted, it is shown that the intuitively satisfying rule of assigning each arrival to the shortest line maximizes, with respect to stochastic order, the discounted number of customers to complete their service in any time t.

A single server is fed by a renewal stream of individual customers. These are of type k with probability πk, k = 1, …, N, and are all served individually. Upon completion of a service the server proceeds immediately with a customer of the lowest type (= highest priority) present, if any. Service times for type k are drawn from a general distribution function Bk(t) concentrated on (0, ∞).

We lay the foundations for a broad analysis of the model.

A single server faces a renewal stream of low and another one of high priority customers, one of them being a Poisson stream. For the preemptive resume and head-of-the line disciplines the transient behaviour of the queue is studied. Various limiting distributions are also obtained.

Consider the following queuing system: A sequence of customers arrive at a service unit in a recurrent stream. A customer is of priority k with probability πk, k = 1, …, n. A class i customer preempts service of class k, k > i. Interrupted service is resumed without loss or gain in service time. Service is FIFO within classes. Service times for class k are drawn from a general distribution function Bk(t).

Using the method of phases and a resolution technique from the theory of Markov processes we obtain Laplace transforms of various distributions.

Determination of the limiting distributions for a class of mixed-type stochastic processes with state-dependent rates of decline is reduced to the solution of a class of integral equations. For the case where the rate of decline is proportional to the state, some results are obtained by solving the integral equation of the process through Fuchs' method.
