The levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were assessed in horse mackerel (Trachurus sp.) samples collected monthly between October 2010 and October 2011 from four regions (Bosphorus, Bandırma, Gelibolu, Tekirdağ) in the Marmara Sea. α-Endosulfan and heptachlor were not detected in any fish samples. The annual average OCP levels among the regions ranged between 0.09–12.2 ng g−1 (wet weight), 0.8–168 (lipid weight), while the annual average PCB levels among the regions ranged between 0.55–4.98 ng g−1 (wet weight), and 7.01–116 (lipid weight), respectively. Total-DDT, total-HCH, PCB 138 and PCB 153 were the most predominant contaminants in the fish samples. There was no relation between lipid content of horse mackerel samples and residues of the contaminants. OCP and PCB levels detected in all of the fish samples were below the limits recommended by the EU Commission (2011), Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (1983), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2011) and Turkish Food Codex (2011).

Including a multi-year collection of samples (2004–2011) the present research fills 20 years of an information gap regarding the PCB burden in south-west Atlantic franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) while aiming to test the null hypothesis that PCBs congeners are increasingly bioaccumulating in south-west Atlantic specimens in relation to northern hemisphere records. In addition, the present survey analyses indicators of potential biological impairment associated to PCBs tissue burden. The results could associate each sampling area group of dolphins to one or two Aroclor® patterns and point to dominant regional diffuse sources entering PCBs mixtures to the marine environment with a possible regional/long-range atmospheric contribution. In addition, total PCB levels were from four to seven times lower than the closer precedents for the area (18–26 years ago) indicating a progress in the environmental release and biota exposure of PCBs and posing an objective indicator of success of the present international elimination programme. Further, when compared with regional and global bioaccumulation patterns, PCBs congeners in Argentinean specimens appeared to occur in a decreasing tendency. Finally, calculated TEQs TCDD levels raised a concern in regards to environmental safety, showing guideline values to be widely exceeded and the occasional occurrence of positive correlations between PCBs bioaccumulation vs. sexual immaturity.

Despite small direct anthropic/anthropogenic influence, Antarctica cannot be considered out of the reach of pollutants. The present study evaluated the distribution and transfer of the following organic pollutants: PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), organochlorine pesticides and PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) in invertebrates, fish, bird eggs and liver samples from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands. The prevailing compounds were (in ng g-1 wet weight for species averages): PCBs up to 1821 for birds, 6.82 for fish and 41.3 for invertebrates, HCB (hexachlorobenzene) up to 69.8 for birds, 0.66 for fish and 0.56 for invertebrates and DDTs (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) up to 524 for birds, 3.04 for fish and 0.74 for invertebrates. PBDEs (detected only in bird eggs and liver, up to 39.1 and 7.95, respectively) occurred in levels one or two orders of magnitude lower than organochlorines, probably due to the lower and more recent usage of PBDEs. The qualitative profiles of PCBs agree with trophic level and diet data. PBDEs showed small difference in composition when compared to the technical product available in the Americas, especially in endemic species, which could indicate that fractionation does not have a major role for this contaminant group. Trophic level, but also and more importantly, diet, range, ecological niche and “growth dilution” effect explain the variation of pollutants concentrations found in this study.

Although mucus plays many different roles among marine invertebrates, relatively little is known about the link between biochemical structure and function. In the present study we focused on some physical and chemical properties of the polychaete Sabella spallanzanii's mucus such as viscosity, osmolarity, electrical conductivity, elemental composition, the protein and carbohydrate content, the total lipids and fatty acid composition, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination. Moreover, an antimicrobial activity of the mucus was investigated. The water content of S. spallanzanii mucus was 96.2±0.3%. By dry weight 26±1.2% was protein, 8±0.21% was carbohydrate and only 0.1% lipid, much of the remainder of the dry weight was inorganic (about 65.2%). The estimated PCBs content was <0.005 μg g−1. The mucus of S. spallanzanii exerted a natural lysozyme-like activity and produced in vitro the growth inhibition of Vibrio anguillarum, Vibrio harveyi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The findings from this study contribute to improve the limited knowledge available on the mucus composition in invertebrates and have implications for future investigations related to employment of S. spallanzanii mucus as a source of compounds of pharmaceutical and marine technological interest.

Samples of phyto- and zooplankton were collected in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean (38–67°S, 18–84°E) and analysed for organochlorine residues (PCBs and pesticides). The PCB concentration in particulate matter (mainly phytoplankton) appeared to be high and similar to that of temperate zones: 0.7 μg g−1 dry weight. Contamination levels were more constant expressed per water volume than per dry weight, and seven times lower (1.2 μg m−3) than in northern temperate zones (8.8 μm−3 in the North Sea). The Antarctic ecosystems are thus less contaminated than temperate ones — as expected — but the very low phytoplankton biomass present cause high PCB levels per unit of biomass. These results confirm the necessity of using different systems of units in order to correctly express the contamination levels and to identify the main mechanisms responsible for the accumulation of stable pollutants. PCB levels in netplankton samples (mainly zooplankton) were comparable with phytoplankton on a dry weight basis (0.7 μm−3), lower on a lipid weight basis (5.8 μg g−1 lw for netplankton, 16.3 for particulate matter) and were much higher per seawater volume (27.2 μg m−3 for netplankton, 1.2 for particulate matter). Netplankton contamination is comparable in the Antarctic (0.35 μg g−1 dw) and the North Sea (0.70) since zooplankton feeding on phytoplankton has similar levels of contamination in both ecosystems. Lindane, heptachlor epoxide, dieldrin, DDE and DDT were observed in various samples at trace levels. The high DDE/DDT ratio reflects the more recent origin of Antarctic organochlorines.

Antarctic penguins constitute excellent indicators of organic pollutants (PCBs, DDTs and HCHs), which reach the Antarctic either by atmospheric or maritime transport and are concentrated through the food chains. They are found mainly in lipids, both in adipose and other tissues of the organisms. Tissue samples of four gentoo and one Adélie penguins were collected during the summers of 1991, 1992 and 1993. PCBs and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were analysed in the adipose tissue, uropygeal gland, blood, brain, muscle, bone and liver. Organochlorines (OCs) were detected in the majority of the samples. The levels found in extractable fat were higher than in other tissues and the concentrations ranged from 42.3–1159.7 ng g−1 (HCB), from not detected to 39.3 ng g−1 (HCHs), from 30.8–972.3 ng g−1 (DDTs) and from 43.2–1583.6 ng g−1 (PCBs).

Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) stomach contents, krill (Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias) and silverfish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) from the Ross Sea were analysed to determine several persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In discussing the data, the prey-predator linkage between these species was taken into account. Sampling was carried out during the 1995/96 and 1999/00 Italian Antarctic Expeditions. Fifty four polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and p,p’-DDE and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were quantified in stomach contents of penguins nesting at Edmonson Point (Victoria Land) and in whole specimens of silverfish and krill from the Ross Sea. Xenobiotic concentrations in organisms were low compared to data reported for many marine species of lower latitudes and ranged from 0.22 ng g−1 wet wt p,p’-DDE in krill to 161 ng g−1 wet wt PCBs in silverfish. Fingerprints and class of isomer patterns showed a predominance of low chlorinated PCBs, mainly in pelagic organisms. Average input of these POPs through the diet was also evaluated. Concentrations of the most toxic non-ortho PCBs, IUPAC nos 77 (3,3′,4,4′), 126 (3,3′,4,4′,5) and 169 (3,3′,4,4′,5,5′), were 1.63 pg g−1, 7.31 pg g−1 and 0.23 pg g−1 wet wt, respectively, in stomach content samples. Stomach contents had 0.037 pg g−1 wet wt TEQ (Toxic Equivalents) of which penta-CB126 accounted for most of the toxicity.

Les niveaux de contamination en pesticides organochlorés mesurés dans les poissons des rivières luxembourgeoises sont peu élevés, à l'exception des concentrations en lindane, pp'DDE et pp'DDT dans la basse-Sûre et ses affluents. Toutefois, ces concentrations ne sont pas particulièrement inquiétantes pour la santé humaine ou pour la survie des loutres. Les concentrations de PCBs mesurées dans les poissons des rivières sont comprises entre 50 et 3500 ng/g P.F., et sont extrêmement variables selonles cours d'eau et les espèces considérés. Dans le lac d'Esch-sur-Sûre, les concentrations sont plus faibles (10 à 200 ng/g P.F.), probablement parce qu'il s'agit d'individus qui ont fait l'objet de rempoissonnements. Dans les populations de poissons des rivières luxembourgeoises, les PCBs sont donc non seulement présents à des concentrations considérées comme problématiques ou dangereuses pour la survie des loutres, mais les standards de consommation pour la santé humaine sont aussi régulièrement dépassés dans les anguilles et chevesnes.
