  • New era of LSST data: Estimating the physical properties of main-sequence galaxies

  • The main goal of the Vera C. Rubin observatory is to perform the 10 year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). This future state-of-art observatory will open the new window to study billions of galaxies from Local Universe as well as the high redshift objects. In this work we employ simulated LSST observations and uncertainties, based on the 50 385 real galaxies within the redshift range 0 < z < 2.5 from the ELAIS-N1 and COSMOS fields of the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) survey, to constrain the physical properties of normal star-forming galaxies, such as their star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (Mstar), and dust luminosity (Ldust). We fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE). The stellar masses estimated based on the LSST measurements agree with the full UV to far-IR SED, while we obtain a clear overestimate of the dust-related properties (SFR, Ldust) estimated with LSST. We investigate the cause of this result and find that it is necessary to employ auxiliary rest-frame mid-IR observations, simulated UV observations, or the far-UV attenuation (AFUV)-Mstar relation to correct for the overestimate.

  • Summary

    The observational parameter space that allows us to detect and describe nonsingle stars is enormous. It comes from the fact that binary stars are very numerous, present themselves with a huge variety of physical properties and have signatures in all astronomical fundamental techniques (astrometry, photometry, spectroscopy). It is, therefore, not a surprise that any significant improvement in observational astronomical facilities has an important impact on our knowledge of binaries. We are currently in an era where the development of various large-scale surveys is impressive. Among them, Gaia and LSST are exceptional surveys that have and likely will have a profound and long-lasting impact on the astronomical landscape. This chapter reviews the status of these two projects, and considers how they improve our knowledge of binary stars.

  • Summary

    With the discovery of both binary black hole mergers and a binary neutron star merger, the field of gravitational wave astrophysics has really begun. The LIGO and Virgo detectors will soon improve their sensitivity allowing for the detection of thousands new sources. All these measurements will provide new answers to open questions in binary evolution related to mass transfer, out-of-equilibrium stars and the role of metallicity. The data will give new constraints on uncertainties in the evolution of (massive) stars, such as stellar winds, the role of rotation and the final collapse to a neutron star or black hole. In the long run, the thousands of detections by the Einstein Telescope will enable us to probe their population in great detail over the history of the Universe. For neutron stars, the first question is whether the first detection GW170817 is a typical source or not. In any case, it has spectacularly shown the promise of complementary electromagnetic follow-up. For white dwarfs, we have to wait for LISA (around 2034), but new detections by, e.g., Gaia and LSST will prepare for the astrophysical exploitation of the LISA measurements.

  • We aim to do forecasts for the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) with a theoretical modeling of the two point angular correlation function. The Fisher matrix is the starting point. This is a square matrix over the cosmological parameters, whose diagonal contains direct informations on the parameters expected uncertainties.

  • Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will make great contributions to many scientific fields. One of the modules will be time-domain astronomy and detection of transient events. In this paper, some considerations about transient events and alerts are presented.

  • We present simulator of alerts for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) developed by Belgrade group. This simulator will be used in testing the functionality of external event brokers/Complex Event Processing (CEP) engines. It is based on current LSST Simulation framework and allows for different classes of objects to be ‘alerted’. A Web service based on our simulator is prototyped and can be accessed by developers of brokers/CEP engines.
