  • Matrix positivity is a central topic in matrix theory: properties that generalize the notion of positivity to matrices arose from a large variety of applications, and many have also taken on notable theoretical significance, either because they are natural or unifying. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date reference of important material on matrix positivity classes, their properties, and their relations. The matrix classes emphasized in this book include the classes of semipositive matrices, P-matrices, inverse M-matrices, and copositive matrices. This self-contained reference will be useful to a large variety of mathematicians, engineers, and social scientists, as well as graduate students. The generalizations of positivity and the connections observed provide a unique perspective, along with theoretical insight into applications and future challenges.   • Summary

    For each 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, the Hardy space \mathcal{H}_p of Dirichlet series is defined as the image through the Bohr transform of the Hardy space of functions on the infinite-dimensional polytorus. The Dirichlet polynomials are dense in \mathcal{H}_p for every 1 ≤ p < ∞. For p=2 this coincides with the space of Dirichlet series whose coefficients are square-summable. A Dirichlet series with coefficients a_n belongs to\mathcal{H}_p if and only if the series with coefficients a_n/n^ε is in \mathcal{H}_p for every ε >0 and the norms are uniformly bounded. In this case, the series is the limit as ε tends to 0. As a technical tool to see this, vector-valued Dirichlet series (that is, series with coefficients in some Banach space) are introduced, and some basic definitions and properties (such as the convergence abscissas, Bohr-Cahen formulas) are given.

  • We explicitly describe the best approximation in geodesic submanifolds of positive definite matrices obtained from involutive congruence transformations on the Cartan-Hadamard manifold $\text{Sym(}n\text{,}\,\mathbb{R}{{\text{)}}^{++}}$ of positive definite matrices. An explicit calculation for the minimal distance function from the geodesic submanifold $\text{Sym(}p\text{,}\,\mathbb{R}{{\text{)}}^{++}}\,\times \,\text{Sym(}q\text{,}\,\mathbb{R}{{\text{)}}^{++}}$ block diagonally embedded in $\text{Sym(}n\text{,}\,\mathbb{R}{{\text{)}}^{++}}$ is given in terms of metric and spectral geometric means, Cayley transform, and Schur complements of positive definite matrices when $p\,\le \,2$ or $q\,\le \,2$.
