Bunodeopsis pelagica is one of the few species of sea anemones known to be found in the floating algae of Sargassum spp. It has been reported in the North Atlantic, particularly in the Canary Islands and the coast of Jamaica. The present study is the first to report the occurrence of B. pelagica in the Mexican Atlantic, found as epiphyte on Sargassum natans off Alacranes reef (southern Gulf of Mexico) and in Puerto Morelos reef (Mexican Caribbean), revealing that this species is much more widespread than has been reported. Bunodeopsis pelagica is mainly distinguished from other species of Bunodeopsis by having simple minute protuberances on its column, while its congeners have larger and much more developed vesicular projections. With the record of B. pelagica, the number of known species of actiniarian sea anemones from the Mexican Atlantic increases to 23.

New in situ records of the sublittoral sea anemone Oulactis coliumensis (Riemann-Zürneck & Gallardo, 1990) are provided from different localities of northern Chile and Peru. Specimens were generally observed buried in shallow soft bottoms (3–25 m depth), near port cities and in areas with a high organic load. This is the first report of the species outside its type locality (off the Bay of Coliumo, Chile; ~36°S), extending its range of distribution to lower latitudes.

Haliactis arctica is a poorly known species of sea anemone of the family Halcampactinidae known only from the Arctic. So far, there have been no reports of it after the original description, based on a few specimens from Greenland, Spitsbergen, the Barents Sea, Novaya Zemlya and the Chukchi Sea. The rich collection of the Zoological Institute RAS, which includes more than 100 specimens, has allowed a detailed morpho-anatomical study of this sea anemone. Examination of the external and internal morphology of H. arctica indicates a noticeable variability of structural features, especially the retractor muscles, parietal muscles and acontia. Comparison of characters between H. arctica with the other representatives of Halcampactinidae shows significant differences in the organization of these anemones. Their morphological differences and also significant geographic remoteness suggest that they should be attributed to different families, however, at present it is impossible to conduct thorough molecular genetic studies that can confirm or refute this assumption.

We resolve taxonomic confusion regarding brooding sea anemones in the genus Epiactis Verrill 1869a in the North Pacific Ocean based on newly collected material from Hokkaido (Japan), Haida Gwaii (British Columbia, Canada), and Kodiak and Adak Islands (Alaska, USA), and museum specimens collected from the Kurile Islands (Russia), Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon (USA), and California (USA). We find that the internally brooding individuals identified by Hand & Dunn (1974) as Cnidopus ritteri (Torrey, 1902) and placed in the genus Epiactis by Fautin & Chia (1986) belong to a new species which we describe and name Epiactis handi sp. nov. Epiactis handi and E. ritteri can be differentiated by morphological and behavioural features including ornamentation and structure of the column and mode of brooding offspring. To highlight and clarify these differences, we redescribe E. ritteri based on specimens from Alaska. We provide the first account of external brooding in E. ritteri, which necessitates a clarification of the differences between E. ritteri and another externally brooding species from the North Pacific, E. japonica Verrill, 1869b. Epiactis ritteri and E. japonica differ in sex allocation, ornamentation of the column and details of external brooding: members of E. ritteri are gonochoric with a smooth column and brood groove which tightly closes, whereas those of E. japonica are hermaphroditic and have mid-column spherules.

Phymactis papillosa is a rocky shore sea anemone that is commonly found in the Pacific Ocean, from the Gulf of California to Tierra del Fuego, and in the Mar del Plata region, Argentina. The genus Phymactis is closely related to Bunodosoma and, due to character plasticity, a number of misidentifications have occurred. Therefore, the presence of P. papillosa in Argentina has been doubted but the matter had not been investigated in detail. Here we analyse P. papillosa specimens from Argentina and compare them, using molecular and morphological markers, to specimens from the species' type locality. In a phylogenetic analysis using 19 allozyme markers and ribosomal internal transcribed spacers sequences of different sea anemone genera, including all West Atlantic Bunodosoma species, we have found that the specimens from Argentina were genetically divergent from P. papillosa from Chile and closely related to West Atlantic Bunodosoma species. The genetic and morphological analyses indicate that those specimens belong to a new species of the genus Bunodosoma, described here as B. zamponii sp. nov.

An excavation in the mid-Ordovician (Caradoc) Bardahessiagh Formation at Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1992 has yielded a rich fauna of invertebrates, including several specimens of the scleractiniamorph coral Kilbuchophyllia. The material is assigned to the species K. clarksoni, previously described from penecontemporaneous levels in the Kirkcolm Formation of the Northern Belt of the Southern Uplands. The diagnosis of K. clarksoni is extended to include specimens of significantly greater size than the Southern Uplands material. All the material is mouldic but includes composite moulds, which in comparison with the preservation of other faunal elements, strongly suggests an original aragonitic composition for the kilbuchophyllid skeleton. Furthermore, details of insertion of higher cycles of septa visible on one particularly well preserved specimen confirm the process of septal substitution in these corals. Septal substitution is otherwise unique to post-Palaeozoic scleractinian corals and indicates the presence of paired mesenteries in the kilbuchophyllid polyp. The significance of this for the evolution of these corals and related anemones is discussed. The discovery of kilbuchophyllid corals at Pomeroy supports the view that post-Caradoc sinistral strike-slip movement on the Southern Uplands Fault was unlikely to have exceeded 200 km.
