We clarify the relationship between Grothendieck duality à la Neeman and the Wirthmüller isomorphism à la Fausk–Hu–May. We exhibit an interesting pattern of symmetry in the existence of adjoint functors between compactly generated tensor-triangulated categories, which leads to a surprising trichotomy: there exist either exactly three adjoints, exactly five, or infinitely many. We highlight the importance of so-called relative dualizing objects and explain how they give rise to dualities on canonical subcategories. This yields a duality theory rich enough to capture the main features of Grothendieck duality in algebraic geometry, of generalized Pontryagin–Matlis duality à la Dwyer–Greenless–Iyengar in the theory of ring spectra, and of Brown–Comenetz duality à la Neeman in stable homotopy theory.

We prove for a large family of rings R that their λ-pure global dimension is greater than one for each infinite regular cardinal λ. This answers in the negative a problem posed by Rosický. The derived categories of such rings then do not satisfy, for any λ, the Adams λ-representability for morphisms. Equivalently, they are examples of well-generated triangulated categories whose λ-abelianization in the sense of Neeman is not a full functor for any λ. In particular, we show that given a compactly generated triangulated category, one may not be able to find a Rosický functor among the λ-abelianization functors.

for a noetherian scheme, we introduce its unbounded stable derived category. this leads to a recollement which reflects the passage from the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves to the quotient modulo the subcategory of perfect complexes. some applications are included, for instance an analogue of maximal cohen–macaulay approximations, a construction of tate cohomology, and an extension of the classical grothendieck duality. in addition, the relevance of the stable derived category in modular representation theory is indicated.

A classical theorem of Zimmermann describes the relation between almost split sequences in the category of finitely presented modules and those in the category of all modules over some fixed ring. An analogue of Auslander–Reiten triangles in triangulated categories is proved in this paper. This is used to explain the relation between different existence results for Auslander–Reiten triangles, which are based either on Brown's representability theorem, or on the existence of Serre functors.
