We identify a class of smooth Banach *-algebras that are differential subalgebras of commutative C*-algebras whose openness of multiplication is completely determined by the topological stable rank of the target C*-algebra. We then show that group algebras of Abelian groups of unbounded exponent fail to have uniformly open convolution. Finally, we completely characterize in the complex case (uniform) openness of multiplication in algebras of continuous functions in terms of the covering dimension.

Metric regularity theory lies in the very heart of variational analysis, a relatively new discipline whose appearance was, to a large extent, determined by the needs of modern optimization theory in which such phenomena as nondifferentiability and set-valued mappings naturally appear. The roots of the theory go back to such fundamental results of the classical analysis as the implicit function theorem, Sard theorem and some others. The paper offers a survey of the state of the art of some principal parts of the theory along with a variety of its applications in analysis and optimization.

In this paper we define lower, upper, and symmetric completeness and discuss closure of the sets in products and direct sums. In particular, we introduce suitable bases for these topologies, which leads us to investigate completeness of the direct sum and its components. Some results obtained about $X$-topologies and polars of the neighborhoods.

For a linear map we introduce two notions of being open according to a subset. With these two definitions, we characterize the linear, nearly open mappings which are open. Thus we generalize a famous theorem of V. Pták.
