I am happy to announce that Language in Society is now accepting manuscript submissions online, at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/langsoc. Online submission and review will make the process more efficient and more transparent, as authors can see at any time where their manuscripts are in the review process. From now on, please submit all manuscripts to this site, including book reviews and book notes. (Authors for whom online submission is not possible may continue to send manuscripts as e-mail attachments, or, if necessary, in hard copies.)

This is the first volume of Language in Society not to include a year-end index of authors and topics. The availability of online bibliographies and indexes, as well as the journal's own full-text-searchable site (http://journals.cup.org/action/displayJournal?jid=LSY) means that few readers still use print indexes. Unlike the print indexes and some online bibliographic databases, the search function on this site can be used without charge by subscribers and nonsubscribers alike.

I am grateful for the support during the past year of the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon University. I am also very grateful to editorial assistant Jennifer Andrus, copyeditor Jane McGary, and Morrell Gillette, Ralph DeMarco, Susan Soule, Elizabeth Thompson and Robert Dreesen at Cambridge University Press. I consult regularly with the journal's associate editors and members of the editorial board, and I value their thoughtful advice and willingness to help.

I am also pleased to acknowledge the contribution of the following scholars who reviewed manuscripts during 2006, when most of the editorial work for Vol. 36 was done:
