As the new editor-in-chief, I am excited to share with you the first issue of Nationalities Papers, the flagship journal of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), now published with Cambridge University Press (CUP). Our partnership with CUP will help us build a closer synergy among ASN, its annual convention in New York that attracts approximately 700 panelists every year, and the journal.
I am going to be working with a great editorial team. Our book reviews editor, Roland Spickermann, will continue his important work. Associate editor Aviel Roshwald will remain on to offer invaluable advice when we need to make tough decisions. Şener Aktürk will keep putting together provocative Book Symposia. Myra Waterbury will continue her wonderful work coordinating Special Issues. Three new associate editors have joined our team. Djordje Stefanovic will work primarily on submissions from historians, and Zeynep Bulutgil will work on those from political scientists and sociologists. Paul Goode will focus on soliciting State of the Field manuscripts. ASN has an international membership from over 50 countries, and this is reflected in our new editorial board. Last, but certainly not least, Danielle Judith Price has joined us as managing editor.
Our goal is to continue producing a top-quality journal, advancing ASN’s mission of promoting knowledge and understanding on nationalism and identity from Europe to Eurasia and beyond. We will be building upon Peter Rutland’s amazing work as editor-in-chief during the last six years as well as Florian Bieber’s work before him. While many journals focus on either nationalism and ethnicity or the geographic areas that this journal covers, no other journal in the field offers such high-quality scholarship from regional experts who concentrate on national identity and ethnicity. Nationalities Papers is unique in its ability to combine strong empirical focus with cutting-edge theory.
Readers will immediately notice that our cover now features a photograph, and the photograph for each cover will be part of a larger annual photo contest. This contest will reward scholars for the best photos taken during their fieldwork. The photos will be judged in terms of content, synthesis, and visually compelling insights about nationalism, ethnicity, and migration. The six prize-winning photographs will be featured on upcoming covers of the journal.
As I begin my term as editor-in-chief, I wish to express my thanks to the leadership of the ASN, CUP, and Peter Rutland for their support in this endeavor. My aspiration is to publish theoretically innovative work grounded in empirical research.
