ANTOSTRAT (the Antarctic Offshore Stratigraphy initiative) began 10 years ago as a collaborative study of Antarctic margin seismic data by offshore seismic profilers who set up an Antarctic Seismic Data Library System. It was soon realised that the ice-transported margin sediments retain a record of ice sheet history that could be recovered by direct sampling, and that ANTOSTRAT formed the springboard for a description of ice sheet history. ANTOSTRAT today aims to describe Antarctic climatic history over the past 100 million years or so. Of this history, by far the most important element is the Antarctic ice sheet, which probably formed 35 to 40 million years ago. Although geologically young, the ice sheet is still about ten times as old as Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. ANTOSTRAT's key aims are to establish when, how and why the Antarctic ice sheet formed.

Erect bryozoans are extremely abundant and diverse in polar waters and individual species may span a wide range in latitude and bathymetry. A number of aspects of lifestyle, including polypide recycling, embryo production, distribution, growth form and epibiosis were compared in three species of erect byozoans. These were collected from two locations; Signy Island (60°S) and Rothera Point, Adelaide Island (68°S) and a variety of depths. All three species were in similar stages of polypide cycling within and between the two sites. In the species Isosecuriflustra rubefacta and Nematoflustra flagellata the rate of brown body production (polypide generations) was slower at Signy Island than at Rothera Point. There was little difference between localities (within species) in the pattern of embryo production and no change in embryo size with depth. Embryos of I. rubefacta, however, were significantly larger at Rothera Point than at Signy Island. The proportion of the community occupied by each species changed with depth, but all three species occurred in shallower water at Rothera Point than at Signy Island. Fouling by epibionts decreased with increasing depth and from Signy Island to Rothera Point, both in terms of per cent cover and number of colonizing taxa. Possible trends with depth and latitude are compared with other studies involving bryozoans. The literature on Antarctic benthic taxa, in general, is also considered to determine whether trends within the Bryozoa are reflected in other groups.

The diet of breeding white-chinned petrels was studied during the summers of 1996 and 1998 at South Georgia. Krill abundance/availability was high throughout 1996 but apparently low at the beginning of the 1998 breeding season. The diet of white-chinned petrels was similar between years and consistent with previous studies. Krill Euphausia superba (41–42% by weight) was the single most important prey item followed by fish (39–29%) and squid (19–25%). Meal mass was consistent (110 g in 1996, 119 g in 1998) between years but a significant decrease (46%) in feeding frequency in 1998 (0.54 meals day−1 compared to 0.75 meals day−1 in 1996) resulted in 19% less food delivered to chicks in 1998 than in 1996. Breeding success, however, was consistent between years at 44% and similar to that recorded previously at Bird Island. This is in contrast to black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses, both of which experienced almost total breeding failure in 1998. It is suggested that their varied and versatile feeding methods, together with their greater diving ability, capacity to feed at night and extensive foraging range, help white-chinned petrels minimise the effects of krill shortage.

The RV Nathaniel B. Palmer was used for bottom trawling at depths of 100–1200 m during two recent cruises in the south-western Ross Sea. Although only 10 of 20 trawls were completely successful, a diverse collection of 979 specimens was obtained representing 47 species (36 notothenioids and 11 nonnotothenioids) and eight families. The collection included four new species, a new colour morph of a known species and eight rare species. The collection also established four new locality records, three second occurrences, three most southerly records and eleven new depth records for fish in the Ross Sea. Good taxonomic coverage for some groups was indicated by collection of all four species of Artedidraco, nine of ten bathydraconids and seven of eight channichthyids occurring in East Antarctica. The most abundant species were Trematomus scotti (29.7%), Bathydraco marri (10.4%), Trematomus eulepidotus (8.7%) and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (6.1%). Fish biomass was determined at two stations. The fish fauna of the Ross Sea south of the 1000-m isobath includes at least 80 species – 54 notothenioids and 26 non-notothenioids, approximately the same number as the Weddell Sea. Species diversity (H′ = 1.88) was higher than both the Weddell Sea and boreal regions. This collection indicates that, even in relatively shallow water, knowledge of specific and intraspecific diversity in the Ross Sea fauna is incomplete.

The seasonal changes of the nutrient regime and the development of algal communities in snow-covered fast ice and the underlying platelet layer was investigated in the eastern Weddell Sea during autumn, winter, and spring 1995. In the upper sea ice, an autumnal diatom community became enclosed during subsequent ice growth in winter, declined, and was replaced by a flagellate dominated community in spring. In this layer, nitrate was completely exhausted at the end of spring, although nutrients had been partly regenerated in early spring. The progressive congelation of platelet ice contributed significantly to sea ice growth thus influencing algal inoculation of the sea ice bottom. Biomass, present in the uppermost section of the platelet layer, could be found in the sea ice bottom after this section congealed to solid ice. After incorporation, species composition changed from larger and chain-forming species to species of smaller cell size. Concurrently, net growth rate slowed down from 0.07 day−1 within the platelet layer to 0.03 day−1 within the sea ice. Despite a thick snow cover of more than 20 cm, maximum biomass yield was 210 mg chl a m−2 in the platelet layer and 40 mg chl a m−2 in the sea ice respectively, while 95% of the latter was located within consolidated platelet ice. Total fast ice biomass observed here is significantly lower than that observed in snow-free fast ice of the Ross Sea, but because snow cover of the southern Weddell Sea is representative of most fast ice areas in the Antarctic, the data presented here are of general value.

Amphipod crustaceans constituted 30% of the food biomass from the stomachs of Antarctic tern (Sterna vittata) captured at King George Island in three consecutive seasons. Five species of lysianassoid amphipods occurred in the material: Abyssorchomene plebs, Cheirimedon femoratus, Hippomedon kergueleni, Waldeckia obesa and Orchomenella rotundifrons. All these amphipods are known as necrophages inhabiting the upper and middle sublittoral of western Antarctic. They are commonly caught in masses in baited traps, but never occur in the littoral zone or in tidal pools. It is suggested that the source of the amphipod diet of S. vittata are seal or penguin carcasses and dead fish brought by waves to the tidal zone, serving as a bait for necrophagous amphipod crustaceans when submerged in water before stranding on the beach.

Geophysical, structural, geomorphological, topographical and bathymetric data from the Hurd Peninsula area, Livingston Island, South Shetland archipelago, suggest that an extensional fault system, orientated NW–SE, together with a conjugate group of NE–SW normal oblique-slip faults, control the landforms in this area. These structures separate fault-bounded blocks of different heights, giving rise to a horstgraben structure. The depressed blocks were filled by glaciers and flooded in part by the sea. The recent movement of these faults can be established from the calculated isopachs of a small Quaternary sedimentary basin, related to this extensional fault system, which shows that sedimentary bed thickness is controlled mainly by the NE–SW fault system. Geomorphological analysis also shows that the NW–SE faults control the main morphostructures of this region. The character of the recent stress tensor has been established from fault-slip data, taking into account only those faults that are related to morphostructures. The calculated palaeostress tensor is extensional, with a N46°E main extension direction, and an average stress ratio of 0.17.

A prominent volcaniclastic channel sandstone deposited by a landward-flowing sediment gravity flow is described from the Maastrichtian of Snow Hill Island in the northern Larsen Basin. The characteristics of this petrographically distinct event deposit appear to indicate a volcanic source to the east of Snow Hill Island, well away from the magmatic arc landmass which sourced the bulk of the Larsen Basin fill, suggesting minor off-axis intrabasinal volcanism in Maastrichtian to Paleogene times.

Mount Willing in the Prince Charles Mountains (East Antarctica) is part of the Fisher Volcano–plutonic complex which formed as part of the global-scale Grenvillian mobile belt system. Mount Willing is composed of four rock complexes: 1) a metamorphic sequence, 2) gabbro intrusions, 3) deformed felsic intrusives, and 4) abundant post-metamorphic dykes and veins. Three rock types constitute the metamorphic sequence: amphibole–biotite felsic plagiogneiss, mafic to intermediate biotite–amphibole schist, and biotite paragneiss. The bulk composition of the mafic schists classifies them as tholeiitic basalts, and rarely as basaltic andesites or andesites. Index mg ranges widely from 47 to 71. Concentrations of TiO2, P2O5, and high-field strength elements are high in some rocks. These rocks are thought to have been derived from enriched (subcontinental) mantle sources. Sm–Nd and U–Pb isotopic data indicate a series of Mesoproterozoic thermal events between 1100 and 1300 Ma. In particular, these events occurred at 1289 ± 10 Ma (volcanic activity), at 1177 ± 16 Ma (tonalite intrusion), at 1112.7 ± 2.4 and at 1009 ± 54 Ma (amphibolite facies metamorphic events). Rb–Sr systematics also indicates a thermal overprint at 636 ± 13 Ma. Mafic schists show low initial 877Sr/86Sr ratios between 0.7024 and 0.7030. Felsic rocks show higher Sri values between 0.7037 and 0.7061. Basaltic andesite metavolcanic and plutonic rocks form a calc-alkaline evolutionary trend, and probably originated from subduction-modified mantle sources in a convergent plate margin environment. An oceanic basin may have existed in central Prince Charles Mountains about 1300 Ma ago and was closed as a result of continental collision around 1000 to 800 Ma.

Dust bands in the blue-ice of the Frontier Mountain meteorite trap (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) were previously reported as upthrust basal debris. Four of them have now been sampled at Frontier Mountain and Lichen Hills. The absence of local rocks and sedimentary fragments, the ubiquitous abundant volcanic glass with no evidence for abrasion, the igneous minerals, the chemical compositions of glass and minerals and the bulk chemical compositions indicate that they are volcanic ash bands (tephra) and not glacial debris. Although hardly distinguishable in the field, the different volcanic ash bands are discriminated using mineralogical and chemical data, as well as particle size, abundance and vesicularity of glass. Chronological constraints, particle size and chemical compositions localize the source for the Frontier Mountain and Lichen Hills tephra within the recent activity of the Mount Melbourne Volcanic Province in northern Victoria Land; possible emission centres are the Pleiades (40 ± 50 ka to 3 ± 14 ka) and/or Mount Rittmann (3.97 Ma to present).

Miocene–Recent alkaline volcanic rocks form numerous outcrops scattered widely throughout the Antarctic Peninsula and eastern Ellsworth Land. They occur mainly as short-lived (typically 1–2 million years) monogenetic volcanic fields but include a large outcrop area in northern Antarctic Peninsula which includes several substantial polygenetic shield volcanoes that were erupted over a 10 million year period (the James Ross Island Volcanic Group (JRIVG)). As a whole, the outcrops are of considerable importance for our understanding of the kinematic, petrological and palaeoenvironmental evolution of the region during the late Cenozoic. Until now, there has been no formal stratigraphical framework for the volcanism. Knowledge of the polygenetic JRIVG is still relatively poor, whereas a unifying lithostratigraphy is now possible for the monogenetic volcanic fields. For the latter, two new volcanic groups and twelve formations are defined, together with descriptions of the type sections. The volcanic fields (both polygenetic and monogenetic) vary in area from c. 1 to 4500 km2, and aeromagnetic data suggest that one may exceed 7 000 km2. The rocks are divisible into two contrasting petrological ‘series’, comprising basanites–phonotephrites and alkali basalts–tholeiites. The JRIVG is dominated by alkali basalts–tholeiites but also contains rare basanites, and phonotephrite–tephriphonolite compositions occur in minor pegmatitic segregations in sills. By contrast, in the monogenetic volcanic fields, basanites–phonotephrites generally form the older outcrops (mainly 15–5.4 Ma) and alkali basalts–tholeiites the younger outcrops (4(?)–<1 Ma). Throughout the region, erupted volumes of alkali basalts–tholeiites were an order of magnitude greater, at least, than those of basanite–phonotephrite compositions. Interpretation of the lithofacies indicates varied Miocene–Recent palaeoenvironments, including eruption and deposition in a marine setting, and beneath Alpine valley glaciers and ice sheets. Former ice sheets several hundred metres thick, and fluctuating ice surface elevations, which were generally higher during the eruptive periods than at present, can also be demonstrated.
