The authors regret the inclusion of an error in the above manuscript. An earlier version incorrectly implied that the author's expert statement was submitted to a German court. The statement, for which the author was not compensated, was submitted to a lawyer arguing in the court case, but the lawyer did not ultimately submit it to the court.

This error resulted in two corrections which are detailed below:

In the 6th paragraph the following sentence ‘The public has a right to know how the court reached its decision and what the state of research on this issue is—even more so since the question of whether the Nazis persecuted transgender people is coming up more and more often, on Twitter and elsewhere’ has been updated to ‘The public has a right to know what the state of research on this issue is--even more so since the question of whether the Nazis persecuted transgender people is coming up more and more often, on Twitter and elsewhere’.

At the end of the 9th paragraph ‘what I wrote for the court’ has been updated to ‘the statement I provided to a lawyer in the case’.

The original manuscript has been updated.

The author apologizes for this error.
