The Central European History Society mourns the passing of Kenneth David Barkin (1939-2022). For most of his academic career, Barkin taught at the University of California, Riverside. A prolific historian with a particular interest in the second German Kaiserreich, he served as editor of Central European History from 1991 until 2004, when he handed over the journal to Kenneth Ledford.

Under Barkin's editorship, CEH became one of the top European history journals on either side of the Atlantic, publishing notable interventions in a number of high-stakes academic debates on central European history. CEHS owes Profesor Barkin a great debt of gratitude for his leadership and contributions to the advancement of the field and discipline.
