The Catholic Record Society regrets to inform readers of British Catholic History of the death of Michael Hodgetts, on 12th December 2022, at the age of 86.
Michael was a renowned scholar and editor. His association with the Catholic Record Society stretched back to his undergraduate days in Oxford, and from 1968 onwards, for some forty years, he was involved in editorial work for the Society, working on both the Records Volumes series and Recusant History, the predecessor of British Catholic History. He also published numerous articles on the priest hides of the sixteenth century, and the houses in which they were built, becoming the acknowledged expert on them.
Not long before his death, Michael completed work on the second volume of Little Malvern Letters, which will be published in due course in the CRS Records Volumes series.
The Catholic Record Society will publish a volume of essays in tribute to Michael, later in 2023, which will contain a full obituary. May he rest in peace.
