2 Dear Colleagues,

3 It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 13th Congress of 4 the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP) in Munich. 5 Munich has the honour of hosting the first AEP meeting to 6 ever take place in Germany• The theme of the Congress is:

7

“European Psychiatry: The interface 8 between biological and social factors”

9 The Scientific Committee has chosen issues related to 10 care of patients and their everyday life as the focus of the 11 scientific and educational programme. You are all aware of 12 the tremendous progress of neurobiological knowledge of 13 brain functioning, with main contributions coming from 14 such different fields as genetics and neuroimaging. On the 15 other hand, psychiatry has always been a discipline in close 16 contact with the social sciences, including sociology, 17 psychology, philosophy and anthropology. The main 18 challenge for psychiatry these days is to organize a fruitful 19 dialogue between these disciplines and to build an interface 20 for the exchange of ideas and details of the latest 21 discoveries. The Scientific and Organizing Committees 22 have attempted to construct a programme which we believe 23 truly represents the broad scientific field of contemporary 24 psychiatry. The diversity of the contributions ensures that the programme contains stimulating sessions for virtually 25 everyone. The Plenary speakers are well-recognized 26 leaders in clinical psychiatry and basic research, whose 27 lectures will be memorable educational experiences. We 28 have organized Debates that are intended to be both 29 informative and entertaining, with the emphasis on 30 controversial issues of modern psychiatry. Experts in their 31 fields will be happy to discuss with you challenging topics 32 in the Meet the Expert Sessions. We also encourage you to 33 attend the Young Psychiatrists Sessions, which are among 34 the most innovative sessions of the meeting. 35

On behalf of the Scientific and the Organizing Committees, 36 we wish you a stimulating, educational and enjoyable meeting, 37 and hope that you will also find some time to attend the cultural 38 events of the Congress and to explore the beautiful city of 39 Munich. 40

We welcome you to the 13th AEP Congress? 41
