It is imperative in our times to review and reconsider the relationships between religion and economics. On both the popular and the scholarly level, our understanding lags behind our perception of the significance of religion in a socially, politically, and economically complex world, and of changes in the relationship between religion and economics.

On March 23, 1981, I received a telephone call from Mr. Victor Tagashov, an official at the Soviet embassy .in Washington. He asked me to respond to four questions (see below), the replies to be published by TASS. I asked for a written copy of the questions and promised a written answer. He agreed, and after receipt I sent him my answers with a specific request to publish them in full and to send me copies of the papers in which they were published.

Since 1958 it has been the stated policy of both the United States and the USSR to achieve a treaty that would ban all nuclear weapons tests. Andrei Sakharov, we now know, played a major, perhaps crucial, role in this matter. And several American scientists, including myself, played a role in establishing and carrying out U.S. policy in this same regard. During the formative period of the late '50s and early '60s we had no idea who Sakharov was or what he was doing. I believe if we had, we would have done a much better job, but the everpresent curtain of Soviet secrecy prevented it.

Contrary to popular perceptions, the governments of the United States and Angola share a core of compatible foreign policy objectives. Each government, for its own reasons, believes that its national interests may be best served by reducing border conflict and external intervention in highly flammable Southwest Africa. This congruence of interests became increasingly apparent and even led to a measure of bilateral cooperation dur ing the last years of the Carter administration.
