Weed Control in Cotton with Emulsified Oils and Herbicidal Naphtha

Abstract

Herbicidal oil emulsions and herbicidal naphthas were applied repeatedly as postemergence treatments to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., ‘Stoneville 7A’) in field investigations over a 4-year period. Postemergence directed applications of high aromatic oils emulsified with water were effective for selective weed control in cotton. Oil emulsions did not cause stem girdling when applied to cotton at any growth stage. Herbicidal naphthas effectively controlled weeds but caused stem girdling when applied after the cotton was 4 weeks old.
