This has been an exciting year for Weed Science. For the past year, we have continued to implement new processes and add new functionality as we completed our transition to Cambridge University Press and published our first volume with them. In the coming year, we plan to include a new template for the journal that will be more streamlined and modern and to improve the Instructions to Contributors.
One of the benefits of being online only will be that we no longer will charge for color photographs or figures, so I would encourage authors to use more color in their submissions. If you look at articles published this past year, you will see an increased use of color in figures and photos that boosts the journal’s readability.
Weed Science continues to be one of the premier journals in the discipline and in the agronomic sciences. The editorial board and staff strive to improve the efficiency of the publication process and expand the scope of the journal. Weed Science seeks to publish more reviews and symposium articles. In the past year, five reviews were submitted, and we are hoping to increase that number in 2018.
For the 12 months preceding November 1, 2017, 244 manuscripts were submitted to Weed Science compared to 205 in the previous 12-month period. Of the manuscripts submitted, 40.4% were accepted compared to 49.7% the previous year. The time from submission to first decision was 37 days this past year compared to 39 days for the previous year.
The impact factor for Weed Science decreased slightly from 1.993 to 1.862 this past reporting cycle, while the 5-year impact factor increased from 2.166 to 2.167.Footnote 1 Although the 1-year impact factor decreased, it is encouraging to see the 5-year impact factor increase.
For the year preceding November 1, 2017, the journal depended on 322 unique reviewers. The excellent reputation of the journal would not be possible without the cutting-edge research submitted by authors and the diligent work of the editorial board and the hundreds of referred reviews that are submitted annually. I wish to thank the members of the editorial board and reviewers for 2017.
