A number of factors are recognized as being of importance in the prognosis of “Myxoedematous Madness” (Asher, 2), and these are discussed in some detail below.
The purpose of this paper is to publicize another factor, namely accidental hypothermia, which, by causing a super-added confusional state, can greatly increase mental disturbance. That this additional psychiatric disorder may be rapidly reversible is demonstrated by the following case report.
