* The Eight Orchestral Pieces were only discovered in 1965. Four of them are little more than thirty seconds in length. Webern wrote no fewer than 18 of these tiny orchestral aphorisms, but published only five of them. It is debatable whether the pieces are self-contained orchestral statements or whether some are little more than chips from the craftsman's bench: however, Webern never destroyed any of the unpublished pieces and the manuscripts bear order numbers, suggesting that eventual publication was intended.
