page 19 note 1 Messiaen's opera Saint François d'Assise was commissioned in 1975 by the then Director of the Paris Opéra, Rolf Liebermann. The score was completed in 1979 and was given its world première at the Paris Opéra on 28 November 1983, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. The performance I heard, on 14 December, was conducted by Ozawa's protégé Kent Nagano.

page 21 note 1 Introduction to the first BBC broadcast of Lutoslawski's Symphony No. 3 on 1 October 1983 (Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti). The work, a CSO commission, received its world première from the same performers in Chicago on 29 September.
