The Contemporary Problem

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  04 February 2010

Extract

(1) Past, (2) present, (3) future. (4) Development, (5) progress, (6) historical validity. (7) Out-of-dateness, (8) what one must, can, and can't do today. I hope my list gives an accurate picture of the contemporary whirlwind of critical and historical concepts, including those implied criteria on the basis of which composers praise and damn each other and each other's exponents and denigrators. Stop the whirlwind while we clear the concepts, one by one.
