8. Russian Officialdom, p. 168 n. Bennett calls attention to Zaionchkovskii's discussion of official salaries but not to his treatment, in the same chapter, of chiny. This chapter is now available in English, edited by Brenda Meehan-Waters (Soviet Studies in History. 18, no. 2 [1979]: 11-113).
