J. Funeral of the Earl of Leicester, 10 October 1588
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 13 October 2009
Abstract
This ‘book’ is a compilation of the Heralds' official papers, those relating to Leicester's funeral being fos. 106–34. The section is headed (fo. 106), ‘Funeral of the E of Leicester obijt 4 September’, and endorsed (fo. 134V), ‘10 October 1588 at Warwick intoxerat ante uxoris ut fama vagatur’. Most of the items bound in this section are bills or memoranda and fo. 118–v (which contains notes on the Countess of Oxford's funeral) is a stray. Fo. 107 is a copy of the order of the proceeding without identities and therefore not printed here. The extracts printed are untitled, but fo. 108–v is obviously a list of principal attendants and mourners, and fos. 117–124 a list of those given mourning blacks, gowns for esquires and above and cloaks for the others. Ranks and and other categories are noted in the margins, these have been introduced into the text in bold. Otherwise the order follows that of the original. Other marginalia are indicated by angle brackets. The figures represent computations of the numbers involved.
