1 By the way, it is untrue that Machiavelli was never involved in ecclesiastical quarrels for benefices, as Professor Martelli claims (p. 49). On the contrary, the letters which Totto Machiavelli sent to his brother (and that I have printed for the first time) prove clearly Totto's constant interest in obtaining benefices (Totto was a priest) so as to enlarge his own estate, with his brother's help.
