At the Thirty-Eighth Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR), the award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychophysiology was presented to David Lykken. The following is based on the text of the citation given by Don Fowles on behalf of the Society's Awards Committee on September 26, 1998.

Fourteen children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 14 normal control children were compared with respect to stimulus- and response-related processes. Subjects with ADHD took part in two additional sessions under methylphenidate or placebo. In both experiments, performance and electrophysiological measures such as the P2, N2, and P3 components of event-related potential and electromyogram (EMG) activity were measured during an Eriksen flanker task. In both groups of children, reaction times (RTs) to arrow stimuli incongruent with the target were longer than those to neutral stimuli (response interference), which were again slower than RTs to target-alone stimuli (perceptual interference). Children with ADHD made more errors to incongruent stimuli and showed more response interference. For correct responses, no differences between the groups in response interference effects on reaction time, P2, N2, and P3 latency, or EMG onset were found. Methylphenidate had a general enhancing effect on accuracy but did not specifically reduce interference from the flanking stimuli. Methylphenidate had no effects on RT, N2 and P2 latency, P3 amplitude or latency, or EMG activity. The conclusion that methylphenidate did not influence response processes contrasts sharply with findings reported by authors using the Sternberg memory search task.

The nature of error detection as manifested by the error-related negativity was examined in both a Sternberg memory search task and a visual search task. Both tasks were performed in conditions with consistent or varied stimulus–response mapping and loads of three or six letters. After subjects were trained extensively in all conditions, they performed the tasks throughout the night without sleeping. The data suggest that the effectiveness of error detection decreases over time because of a decrease in the quality of perceptual processing. Error detection also suffers when performance requires more search-related resources. In both cases, the representation of the correct response is compromised. These results indicate that error detection depends on the same perceptual and cognitive processes that are required for correct performance.

The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health opened in 1995 to facilitate the advancement of research on social and behavioral influences on health. The establishment of the OBSSR coincided with the ascendancy of molecular biology, with its emphasis on more reductionistic influences on health. This greater emphasis on genetic aspects of health has the potential to produce a widening chasm between biomedical research and social, behavioral, and psychological research. We discuss the chasm between sociobehavioral and biomedical research during what might be considered the era of molecular biology and propose the concept of levels of analysis as a unifying framework for research in the health sciences, using research on hypertension in African Americans as a representative example. We also argue for the primacy of psychophysiological research in bridging the chasm and furthering a multilevel perspective and summarize some of the activities of the OBSSR that are relevant to this perspective.

Olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) were recorded monopolarly at the Fz, Cz, and Pz electrode sites in 16 young adults and 16 older adults to assess aging effects on the olfactory P3. Amyl acetate was used to elicit the OERPs, with an intertrial interval of 45 s. Young adults produced significantly larger P3 amplitudes and shorter P3 peak latencies than older adults. The olfactory P3 response appears to be sensitive to age-related changes in the olfactory system and may reflect cognitive slowing in the central nervous system.

Many of the social, economic, and political problems facing people with schizophrenia are due to a misconception in the community that schizophrenia is not a biologically based disease but a myth. Because the diagnosis is based on self-reported symptoms, it is difficult for many people to acknowledge that schizophrenia is real. One goal of psychophysiological research has been to anchor both diagnosis and symptoms in biological reality. Reduction of the amplitude of the P300 component of the event-related potential (ERP) is the most replicable biological marker of the disease. Data are presented suggesting that P300 is both a state and a trait marker of the disease and may be sensitive to the progressive/degenerative course of the disease. Although the P300 tracks changes in clinical symptoms, it remains reduced even in patients in relative remission. P300 amplitude reduction is related to enduring negative symptoms, waning of attention, and gray matter volume deficits. ERP components other than P300 can also manifest the biological reality of various symptoms of the disease.

The effect of attention allocation on smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) was investigated. Eye movements were electrooculographically recorded in 27 healthy subjects who tracked a visual target that moved horizontally with constant or unpredictably varying velocity. In some trials, subjects performed additional auditory discrimination tasks varying in difficulty. Pursuit error decreased when attention was divided between both tasks. The pattern of results is incompatible with the assumption made in previous research that attention enhancement improves SPEM accuracy. Rather, ocular smooth pursuit appears to be executed in the automatic mode, although intentional and selective processes must contribute. Moreover, controlled attention directed to the tracking task interfered with smooth pursuit. A reinterpretation of earlier studies in which visual monitoring tasks were used to improve eye tracking is needed.

Asymmetry of waking electroencephalography (EEG) alpha power in frontal regions has been correlated with waking emotional reactivity and the emotional content of dream reports. Little is known regarding alpha asymmetry during sleep. The present study was performed to compare alpha power and alpha power asymmetry in various brain regions across states of sleep and wakefulness. Waking and sleep EEG were recorded in a group of patients undergoing polysomnographic evaluation for possible sleep disorders. Alpha EEG asymmetry in frontal and temporal regions was significantly correlated in waking versus sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These results suggest that patterns of frontal alpha asymmetry are stable across sleep and waking and may be related to emotional reactivity during dreaming. During sleep, alpha power was highest during slow-wave sleep and lowest during REM sleep. Implications of these data for understanding the functional significance of alpha power during waking and sleeping are considered.

For almost two decades, researchers have demonstrated that hypertension is reliably associated with decreased perception of pain. More recently, a growing body of evidence has begun to suggest that hypoalgesia is not a consequence of high blood pressure, as the phenomenon precedes the onset of hypertension in individuals at risk for the disorder. This article provides a review of empirical evidence of decreased pain perception in normotensive persons with a family history of hypertension, elevated resting blood pressure, or exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity to stress. Based on the existing evidence, hypoalgesia is argued to be a correlate of dysregulation of central nervous system structures involved in both pain control and cardiovascular regulation in individuals who are genetically predisposed to develop high blood pressure. As such, hypoalgesia may serve as a valuable method of identifying individuals at greatest risk for hypertension.

Studies of concurrent central, and autonomic activity using a conventional event-related potential (ERP) oddball paradigms, are considered useful in elucidating the relationship between central and autonomic responses, but the autonomic response tends to overlap. A new method was used to decompose and score overlapping skin conductance responses (SCR). This method enabled examination of dynamic relationships of phasic SCR, prestimulus electroencephalogram (EEG), and ERP to auditory target stimuli in 50 normal adults. SCR amplitude was negatively correlated to EEG and N200 amplitude. The SCR amplitude changes over time exhibited an exponential decline opposite to those of N200, alpha, and beta. All the fitted exponential functions had a time constant of 1–2 min. The findings suggest that a N200 component, active in the auditory sensory discrimination, is concomitant with the SCR. The narrow range of the time constant may provide a clue to the conjoint processes underlying central and autonomic adaptive functions.

In the present study, we examined whether the use of partial information for response preparation depends on the utility of that partial information for meeting task demands. Using a choice/Nogo task, the utility of the partial information was varied by manipulating the proportion of Go relative to Nogo signals, and preliminary response preparation was indexed by the degree of lateralized readiness potential (LRP) activity on Nogo trials. The Nogo LRP was clearly present when Go probability was high (67% Go) and, to a lesser extent, when Go and Nogo signals were equiprobable. However, the Nogo LRP disappeared when the probability of a Go signal was low (25% Go). This pattern of results supports the hypothesis that response preparation will be based on partial stimulus information only when the information has significant utility in the context of the overall task requirements.

The influence of sleep state (i.e., active and quiet) on heart period, heart period variability, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and the coupling between RSA and heart period was evaluated in 24 healthy full-term newborns. Electrocardiogram (ECG) data were collected, and sleep state was coded 1 hr after feeding until at least 10 min of data were collected in states of active and quiet sleep. ECG data were analyzed for the first five continuous minutes of each sleep state. Relative to active sleep, quiet sleep was associated with significantly higher amplitude RSA, lower heart period variability, and longer heart periods. Because RSA amplitude reflects the functional output of vagal pathways originating in the nucleus ambiguus, it was hypothesized that sleep state would influence how these vagal pathways regulate instantaneous changes in heart period. A new method, evaluating the instantaneous coupling of RSA and heart period, demonstrated that coupling was significantly greater during active sleep. The neurophysiological explanation extends the polyvagal theory to include potential cortical–brain stem connections.

There is uncertainty concerning the extent to which the auditory streaming effect is a function of attentive or preattentive mechanisms. The mismatch negativity (MMN), which indexes preattentive acoustic processing, was used to probe whether the segregation associated with the streaming effect occurs preattentively. In Experiment 1, alternating high and low tones were presented at fast and slow paces while subjects ignored the stimuli. At the slow pace, tones were heard as alternating high and low pitches, and no MMN was elicited. At the fast pace a streaming effect was induced and an MMN was observed for the low stream, indicating a preattentive locus for the streaming effect. The high deviant did not elicit an MMN. MMNs were obtained to both the high and low deviants when the interval between the across-stream deviance was lengthened to more than 250 ms in Experiment 2, indicating that the MMN system is susceptible to processing constraints.

Alterations in a number of measures of cardiac activity were examined during sleep onset in 6 participants over 3 experimental nights. Each sleep onset was divided into four consecutive phases: wakefulness, mixed alpha and theta activity, stage 2 NREM sleep with arousals, and stable stage 2 sleep. The variables measured were heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), pre-ejection period (PEP) and T-wave amplitude (TWA). Respiration rate (RR) was also measured. HR and RR were lower in stable Stage 2 sleep compared with wakefulness, whereas PEP, TWA and RSA did not change significantly. During the second and third phases of sleep onset, HR decreased at each transition into sleep and increased following each spontaneous arousal. This increase resolved rapidly, with a return to sleep levels by 12 beats after the arousal. HR changes are discussed with reference to RSA, PEP, TWA and the concept of a waking reflex.

In this study, we explored the effects of flash intensity and age on visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) in a sample of 85 children aged 8–15 years. Results of previous studies are discrepant regarding the extent to which children show an evoked potential augmenting tendency at vertex, which has been reported to be a characteristic of an immature inhibitory control system. In the present study, VEPs to light flashes of four different intensities were recorded at Cz. The results confirmed that P1N1 and N1P2 at Cz were positively related to increases in stimulus intensity, whereas N1 was not related reliably to intensity. This difference between peak–peak and baseline–peak amplitude findings at Cz relative to evoked potential augmenting and reducing may help to explain discrepant results among earlier studies. Developmental changes were found for our sample of children that were independent of stimulus intensity: N1 amplitude increased significantly with age, whereas N1 latency showed a small (nonsignificant) age-related decrease.

Thirty scalp sites were used to investigate the specific topography of the event-related potentials (ERPs) related to face associative priming when masked eyes of familiar faces were completed with either the proper features or incongruent ones. The enhanced negativity of N210 and N350, due to structural incongruity of faces, have a “category specific” inferotemporal localization on the scalp. Additional analyses support the existence of multiple ERP features within the temporal interval typically associated with N400 (N350 and N380), involving occipitotemporal and centroparietal areas. Seven reliable dipole locations have been evidenced using the brain electrical source analysis algorithm. Some of these localizations (fusiform, parahippocampal) are already known to be involved in face recognition, the other ones being related to general cognitive processes related to the task's demand. Because of their specific topography, the observed effects suggest that the face structural congruency process might involve early specialized neocortical areas in parallel with cortical memory circuits in the integration of perceptual and cognitive face processing.

In Näätänen's model of early attention, the role of arousal in influencing the permanent feature detection system (indexed by mismatch negativity [MMN]) and the temporary feature-detection system (indexed by processing negativity [PN]) is unclear. To address this question, we investigated the effects of the anesthetic gas nitrous oxide (N2O) on the MMN and PN. Ten subjects performed a dichotic listening task in which discrimination difficulty and breathing mixture (air or 25% N2O) were manipulated factorially. MMN, PN, N1 and P300 at Fz, Cz, and Pz, as well as reaction time (RT), were measured. N2O had no effect on the PN, but decreased MMN amplitude. As expected, N2O decreased the amplitude of the N1 and P300 and increased the latency of the P300 and RT. The dissociation of MMN and PN by N2O suggests that this agent decreases the ability to detect automatic stimulus change without affecting voluntary selective attention. We interpret these results as indicating that arousal has multidimensional effects on early attentional mechanisms. These dimensions can be differentiated chemically by neurotransmitters in the reticular formation of the brain.

Strained breathing is a natural respiratory pattern, with cardiovascular implications. It is associated with social factors, attention, expectation, and anxiety and with defense behavior in animals. An inhibition of active behavior is characteristic. Strained breathing is based on the functional heterogeneity of the medullary postinspiratory neurons. In stressful circumstances, muscle tension and laryngeal reflexes induce a strong reduction of airflow in the glottis, resulting in a prolonged Stage I of expiration and an elevated intrathoracic pressure. The resulting elevations of blood pressure and CO2 level further stimulate the strained breathing pattern. The straining factor intrathoracic pressure is an important psychophysiological parameter. Functional aspects of strained breathing may be an elevated brain perfusion and the prevention of hyperventilation. It induces blood pressure oscillations and respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Frequent strained breathing may contribute to cardiovascular pathology and sleep apnea, creating a link between functional behavior and disease.

We investigated if incongruent solutions of simple multiplication problems would elicit similar event-related brain potentials as inappropriate words in sentences. In Experiment I, 12 subjects verified the appropriateness of solutions of multiplication problems or of final words in short sentences. Both incongruent solutions and incongruent words evoked a phasic negative shift between 300 and 500 ms having a similar topography. In Experiment II, we tested with another sample of 13 subjects if the amplitude of this arithmetic N400 effect was affected differently by different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA = 200 and 500 ms) and by errors that were either table-related or table-unrelated to the preceding operands. Again, incorrect solutions elicited an arithmetic N400 effect whose amplitude depended on both the relatedness of the solution and the SOA. The ascending part of the N400 effect was always larger for unrelated than for related errors independently of the SOA, whereas the maximum of the N400 effect was larger for unrelated errors in case of a long SOA only. This pattern of effects was similar to that observed with semantic material varying lexical associations. These results suggest that arithmetic incongruencies are handled by the system in a manner functionally similar to that of semantic incongruencies.

The effects of stimulus intensity, duration, and risetime on the autonomic and behavioral components of orienting, startle, and defense responses were investigated. Six groups of 10 students were presented with 15 white noise stimuli at either 60 or 100 dB, with controlled risetimes of either 5 or 200 ms, and at stimulus durations of 1 or 5 s (1 s only in the case of the 60-dB groups). A dishabituation stimulus consisting of a 1000 Hz tone was also presented. Measures consisted of skin conductance and heart rate, together with ratings of facial expressions and upper torso movement obtained using video recording. Increased intensity resulted in greater amplitudes and frequencies of electrodermal and behavioral responses, and a change from cardiac deceleration to acceleration. Faster risetimes elicited larger electrodermal responses, greater frequencies of eye-blinks, head and body movements, and larger cardiac accelerations. The effects of duration for the 100-dB stimuli were less clear-cut. Overall, the results are discussed in relation to the differentiation of orienting, startle, and defense responses.
