One hundred years ago, on the twenty-seventh of March, died Ludwig van Beethoven, a composer whom universal opinion has placed among the greatest men of all time. It is not my purpose to give a sketch of his life, but, as far as it lies within my power, to reconstruct his position in 1827; to explain his position in 1927; and to forecast his probable position in 2027.
