Are voids in the distribution of galaxies only places with reduced matter density and low star formation efficiency or are they empty of matter? There is now compelling evidence of expansion away from the Local Void at very high velocities. The motion is most reasonably interpreted as an evacuation of the void, which requires that the void be very large and very empty.

Accreting T Tauri stars are observed to be less luminous in X-rays than non-accretors, an effect that has been detected in various star forming regions. To explain this we have combined, for the first time, a radiative transfer code with an accretion model that considers magnetic fields extrapolated from surface magnetograms obtained from Zeeman-Doppler imaging. Such fields consist of compact magnetic regions close to the stellar surface, with extended field lines interacting with the disk. We study the propagation of coronal X-rays through the magnetosphere and demonstrate that they are strongly absorbed by the dense gas in accretion columns.

After a brief discussion it was agreed that this membership is well distributed in terms of geography, gender, and fields of planetary work.

The near infrared (1–2μm) and the thermal infrared (3–25μm) trace many of the environments in which masers are thought to reside, including shocks, outflows, accretion disks, and the dense medium near protostars. After a number of recent surveys it has been found that there is a higher detection rate of mid-IR emission towards masers than cm radio continuum emission from UC HII regions, and that the mid-IR emission is actually more closely cospatial to the maser locations. A high percentage of water and methanol masers that are not coincident with the UC HII regions in massive star forming regions are likely to be tracing outflows and extremely young high mass stars before the onset of the UC HII region phase. After a decade of groundwork supporting the hypothesis that linearly distributed class II methanol masers may generally trace accretion disks around young massive stars, compelling evidence is mounting that these masers may generally be associated with outflows instead. Substantiation of this claim comes from recent outflow surveys and high angular resolution mid-IR imaging of the maser environments.

The formal errors on the astrometric data in the 1997 publication of the Hipparcos catalogue are, for stars brighter than about magnitude 9, largely the result of inaccuracies in the description of the along-scan attitude of the satellite. A detailed study of the dynamics of the Hipparcos satellite has led to a much improved understanding and modelling of the satellite attitude, taking into account peculiarities in the rotation of the payload (scan-phase jumps) as well as the detections of small hits. A new reduction of the Hipparcos data was initiated, in which the attitude modelling is a direct description of the dynamics of the satellite. In this so-called fully-dynamic attitude modelling the underlying torques acting on the satellite are reconstructed, and rates and error angles are obtained through integrations. Both the hits and the scan-phase jumps could be taken into account in the context of this model. The new model, including the provisions for discontinuities, led to a factor five reduction in the attitude noise. A new reduction, based on a global iterative solution like is also planned for Gaia, was started in 2004, and completed, after some 15 iterations, in 2007. In the process of this reduction, also the sensitivity of the solution to optimal connectivity between the data in the two fields of view was exposed and taken care of, as well as a couple of small-scale calibrations. The latter had not been possible to solve for in the original reductions. In the catalogue that resulted from this new reduction, the errors on the astrometric data for all but stars brighter than magnitude 4, are dominated by photon noise. Error-correlation levels in the underlying abscissa data are down by more than an order of magnitude, and play no longer any significant role. This feature very much simplifies the analysis of, for example, wide-binary stars and open cluster data.

We review the role of rotation in massive close binary systems. Rotation has been advocated as an essential ingredient in massive single star models. However, rotation clearly is most important in massive binaries where one star accretes matter from a close companion, as the resulting spin-up drives the accretor towards critical rotation. Here, we explore our understanding of this process, and its observable consequences. When accounting for these consequences, the question remains whether rotational effects in massive single stars are still needed to explain the observations.

The global colors and structure of galaxies have recently been shown to follow bimodal distributions. Galaxies separate into a “red sequence”, populated prototypically by early-type galaxies, and a “blue cloud”, whose typical objects are late-type disk galaxies. Intermediate-type (Sa-Sbc) galaxies populate both regions. It has been suggested that this bimodality reflects the two-component nature of disk-bulge galaxies. However, it has now been established that there are two types of bulges: “classical bulges” that are dynamically hot systems resembling (little) ellipticals, and “pseudobulges”, dynamically cold, flattened, disk-like structures that could not have formed via violent relaxation. Alas, given the different formation mechanisms of these bulges, the question is whether at types Sa-Sbc, where both bulge types are found, the red-blue dichotomy separates galaxies at some value of disk-to-bulge ratio, B/T, or, whether it separates galaxies of different bulge type, irrespective of their B/T. In this paper, we identify classical bulges and pseudobulges morphologically with HST images in a sample of nearby galaxies. Detailed surface photometry reveals that: (1) The red – blue dichotomy is a function of bulge type: at the same B/T, pseudobulges are in globally blue galaxies and classical bulges are in globally red galaxies. (2) Bulge type also predicts where the galaxy lies in other (bimodal) global structural parameters: global Sérsic index and central surface brightness. Hence, the red – blue dichotomy is not due to decreasing bulge prominence alone, and the bulge type of a galaxy carries significance for the galaxy's evolutionary history.

We study the excitation and damping of transverse oscillations in a complex multi-stranded model of a coronal loop. By numerically solving the time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in two dimensions, we show how the global motion of the whole bundle of tubes, produced by an external disturbance, is converted into localised motions due to the process of resonant absorption. At any location in the structure two dominant frequencies are found, the frequency of the global mode (different from the kink frequency of the individual strands) and the local Alfvén frequency. The mechanism of mode conversion is not affected by the complicated geometry of the system and for certain configurations the energy conversion does not only take place at the external edge of the composite loop but also inside the structure.

Numerical SPH simulations of supersonic gravo-turbulent fragmentation of a protocluster cloud (1000 M⊙) suggest that the cloud develops a few subclusters (star+gas systems) which subsequently merge into a single cluster entity. Each subcluster carries one most massive star (likely multiple), thus the merging of subclusters results in a central Trapezium-type system, as observed in the core of the Orion Nebula cluster.

Window functions describe, as a function of orbital period, the probability that an existing planetary transit is detectable in one's data for a given observing strategy. We show the dependence of this probability upon several strategy and astrophysical parameters, such as length of observing run, observing cadence, length of night, and transit duration. The ability to detect a transit is directly related to the intrinsic noise of the observations. In our simulations of the window function, we explicitly address non-correlated (white) noise and correlated (red) noise and discuss how these two different noise components affect window functions in different manners.

The role of the star-disk interaction region in launching the high velocity component of accretion-driven outflows is examined. Spectroscopic indicators of high velocity inner winds have been recognized in T Tauri stars for decades, but identifying the wind launch site and the accompanying mass loss rates has remained elusive. A promising new diagnostic is He I λ10830, whose metastable lower level results in a powerful probe of the geometry of the outflowing gas in the interaction region. This, together with other atomic and molecular spectral diagnostics covering a wide range of excitation and ionization states, suggests that more than one launch site of the innermost wind is operational in most accreting stars.

Current explanation of the overabundance of dark matter subhalos in the Local Group (LG) indicates that there maybe a limit on mass of a halo, which can host a galaxy. This idea can be tested using voids in the distribution of galaxies: at some level small voids should not contain any (even dwarf) galaxies. We use observational samples complete to MB = −12 with distances less than 8 Mpc to construct the void function (VF): the distribution of sizes of voids empty of any galaxies. There are ~ 30 voids with sizes ranging from 1 to 5 Mpc. We then study the distribution of dark matter halos in very high resolution simulations of the LCDM model. The theoretical VF matches the observations remarkably well only if we use halos with circular velocities larger than 45 ± 10 km/s. This agrees with the Local Group predictions. There are smaller halos in the voids, but they should not produce any luminous matter. Small voids look quite similar to their giant cousins: the density has a minimum at the center of a void and it increases as we get closer to the border. Small nonluminous halos inside the void form a web of tiny filaments. Thus, both the Local Group data and the nearby voids indicate that isolated halos below 45 ± 10 km/s must not host galaxies and that small (few Mpc) voids are truly dark.

We have calculated a large set of detailed binary models and used them to test the observed stellar population ratios that compare the relative populations of blue supergiants, red supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars at different metallicities. We have also used our models to estimate the relative rate of type Ib/c to type II supernovae. We find, with an interacting binary fraction of about two thirds, that we obtain better agreement between our models and observations than with single stars. We discuss the use of models in determining the nature of supernova progenitors and show the surprising result that many type Ib/c supernova progenitors are less luminous and less massive in our models than the observed population of Wolf-Rayet stars.

We report on an extension, through cosmological simulations, of the two-phase formation scenario for elliptical galaxies to classical spiral bulges. In particular, we analyze the possibility that the old stellar population of bulges forms in a fast phase, while the younger stellar component forms or is assembled in a slow phase, in part from disk material suffering instabilities and in part through satellite capture or mergers.

Existing algorithms of analysis of radial velocity time series are improved for the purposes of extrasolar planets detection and characterizing. Three important effects are considered: the poorly known radial velocity jitter, periodic systematic errors, and statistical bias due to non-linearity of models. Mathematical tools to account for these effects are developed and applied to a number of real planetary systems. In particular, it is shown that two outer planets of HD37124 are likely trapped in the 2/1 resonance. The dwarf star GJ876 may host an extra, Neptune-mass, planet which is in resonance with two giant planets in this system.

A new star catalog has been derived recently, which is based on combination of Hipparcos/Tycho Catalogues with long lasting ground-based astrometric observations. In addition to ‘classical’ mean positions and proper motions of the stars, it contains also information on periodic motions of many stars that are due to double or multiple stellar systems. The catalog, called EOC-3, contains 4418 different objects, out of which 585 have significant periodic motions. This improved catalog is used as a reference frame in optical wavelength to derive a new series of Earth Orientation Parameters. To this end, almost five million observations of latitude/universal time variations made at 33 observatories are used. The new EOP series covers almost the entire 20th century (namely the interval 1899.7-1992.0).

The meeting was attended by six from the WG (K. Aksnes, J. Blunck, G. Consolmagno, B. Marsden, R. Schulz, V. Shevchenko) and two from the Task Groups (D. Morrison, J. Watanabe). Also the incoming WG members E. Bowell and R. Courtin, as well as some guests, attended.

We present a review of the field of formaldehyde (H2CO) 6cm masers in the Galaxy. Previous to our ongoing work, H2CO 6cm masers had been detected in the Galaxy only toward three regions: NGC7538 IRS1, Sgr B2, and G29.96–0.02. Current efforts by our group using the Very Large Array, Arecibo, and the Green Bank Telescope have resulted in the detection of four new H2CO 6cm maser regions. We discuss the characteristics of the known H2CO masers and the association of H2CO 6cm masers with very young regions of massive star formation. We also review the current ideas on the pumping mechanism for H2CO 6cm masers.

The extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) imagers onboard the planned Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Solar Orbiter (SO) will offer us the best chance yet of using observations of post-flare loop oscillations to probe the fine structure of the corona. Recently developed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave theory has shown that the properties of loop oscillations depend on their plasma fine structure. Up to this point, many studies have concentrated solely on the effect of plasma density stratification on coronal loop oscillations. In this paper we develop MHD wave theory which models the effect of an inhomogeneous magnetic field on coronal loop oscillations. The results have the potential to be used in testing the efficacy of photospheric magnetic field extrapolations and have important implications regarding magneto-seismology of the corona.

The extensive stellar radial-velocity surveys of the WIYN Open Cluster Study now allow comprehensive studies of the solar-type hard-binary populations in open clusters as a function of age. We first describe an empirical “initial” hard-binary population as derived from the young open cluster NGC 2168 (M35). Given the limited analyses so far, the cluster binary population is indistinguishable from that of the field. We then compare the hard-binary population in the old open cluster NGC 188 to the binary population in the sophisticated N-body simulations of the old cluster M67 by Hurley et al. The binary populations in the cluster and the simulation show significant differences in binary frequency and fraction of circularized binaries, while otherwise showing similar orbital eccentricity distributions. Since the simulations were designed to match the encounter products in M67, such as blue stragglers, the large reduction in binary fraction indicated by the empirical results likely will also require changes in the simulation physics producing blue stragglers and other anomalous stars arising from stellar dynamics. We present three case studies of stars in open clusters which very likely are products of dynamical encounters between binaries and either single stars or other binaries: the M67 blue straggler S1082, the M67 sub-subgiant S1113, and the horizontal branch star 6819-3002 in the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 6819. Finally, we remind the reader of recent empirical results on the rates of tidal interactions, using tidal circularization periods in open clusters. Every indication is that current theories underestimate the effectiveness of tidal circularization, a result that need to be incorporated into dynamical simulations of dense stellar systems.
