We search for extended regions of radio emission not associated with Active Galactic Nuclei, known as ‘relics’, ‘halos’ and ‘mini halos’, in a sample of 70 Abell clusters for which we have radio, optical and X-ray data. AGN can produce particle bubbles of non-thermal emission, which can restrict cosmic rays. Hence, radio relics and (mini) halos could be forming as a result of the confinement of cosmic rays by these bubbles. We are probing the role that intracluster magnetic fields (using Faraday rotation measure and inverse compton arguments), mergers (through radio/X-ray interactions), cooling flows (X-ray data), radio jets/shocks, as well as radio (mini) halos/relics, play in the formation, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. For the current study, we have selected two powerful nearby radio galaxies from our sample: Hercules A and 3C 388. We report on the work in progress and future plans.

Using radio and X-ray data of two powerful radio galaxies, we attempt to find out the role that radio jets (in terms of composition and power), as well as intracluster magnetic fields, play in the formation, propagation, and acceleration of cosmic rays. For this study we have selected the powerful radio galaxies Hercules A and 3C 310 because of the presence of ring-like features in their kpc-scale radio emission instead of the usual hotspots. These two FR1.5 lie at the center of galaxy cooling flow clusters in a dense environment. We observed the unique jets of Hercules both in kpc-scales (multifrequency VLA data) and pc-scales (EVN observations at 18 cm). We have also observed the core and inner jets of 3C310 at 18 cm using global VLBI. We report on the work in progress.

Several galaxy clusters are known to present multiple and misaligned pairs of cavities seen in X-rays, as well as twisted kiloparsec-scale jets at radio wavelengths. It suggests that the AGN precessing jets play a role in the formation of the misaligned bubbles. Also, X-ray spectra reveal that typically these systems are also able to supress cooling flows, predicted theoretically. The absence of cooling flows in galaxy clusters has been a mistery for many years since numerical simulations and analytical studies suggest that AGN jets are highly energetic, but are unable to redistribute it at all directions. We performed 3D hydrodynamical simulations of the interaction between a precessing AGN jet and the warm intracluster medium plasma, in which dynamics is coupled to a NFW dark matter gravitational potential. Radiative cooling has been taken into account and the cooling flow problem was studied. We found that precession is responsible for multiple pairs of bubbles, as observed. The misaligned bubbles rise up to scales of tens of kiloparsecs, where the thermal energy released by the jets are redistributed. After ~150 Myrs, the temperature of the gas within the cavities is kept of order of ~107 K, while the denser plasma of the intracluster medium at the central regions reaches T ~ 105 K. The existence of multiple bubbles, at diferent directions, results in an integrated temperature along the line of sight much larger than the simulations of non-precessing jets. This result is in agreement with the observations. The simulations reveal that the cooling flows cessed ~50–70 Myr after the AGN jets are started.

As any human labor, the editing process of a book is open to human error. Especially, when there are more than 100 contributors and strict deadlines. Ours was not free of such a fate, but the good will of Cambridge University Press allows us to correct an involuntary omission.

Significant historic cosmic evolution for the formation rate of stellar black holes is inferred from current theoretical models of the evolution of massive stars, the multiple observations of compact stellar remnants in the near and distant universe, and the cosmic chemical evolution. The mean mass of stellar black holes, the fraction of black holes/neutron stars, and the fraction of black hole high mass X-ray binaries (BH-HMXBs)/solitary black holes increase with redshift. The energetic feedback from large populations of BH-HMXBs form in the first generations of star burst galaxies has been overlooked in most cosmological models of the reionization epoch of the universe. The powerful radiation, jets, and winds from BH-HMXBs heat the intergalactic medium over large volumes of space and keep it ionized until AGN take over. It is concluded that stellar black holes constrained the properties of the faintest galaxies at high redshifts. I present here the theoretical and observational grounds for the historic cosmic evolution of stellar black holes. Detailed calculations on their cosmic impact are presented elsewhere (Mirabel, Dijkstra, Laurent, Loeb, & Pritchard 2011).

I review current ideas on the launching, acceleration, collimation and propagation of relativistic jets and the influence of strong magnetic fields in the process. Recently, several important elements of the entire jet “engine” structure have been shown to play key roles in the production of an astrophysical jet. Depending on the type of system, these include the spin of the central black hole, the thermal and/or magnetic state of the accretion flow, the presence of a re-collimation point in the jet outflow far away from the central object, and the behavior of MHD shocks and kink instabilities in the final jet. While these physical processes probably are at work in all types of relativistic jets (and many even in more benign stellar outflows), I shall concentrate on ones produced by lower luminosity black hole sources, both in active galactic nuclei and in X-ray binaries. I also will discuss the connection between the theoretical concepts and the large body of observational data now available on these systems.

A recent progress in the study of γ-ray jets is reviewed, with a focus on some theoretical interpretations of the VHE emission from M87, and possibly other misaligned blazars; the connection between the GeV breaks exhibited by bright LAT blazars and opacity sources in the broad line region; the consequences of the detection of GeV emission from GRBs to models of magnetic outflows; and the implications of the thermal emission observed is some GRBs to dissipation of the outflow bulk energy.

We show one of possible directions of general relativistic MHD (GRMHD) calculations of astrophysical relativistic jet formation. This was motivated by observations of radio knot ejections associated with high energy flares of an AGN in M87 and micro-quasars. We introduce a modified version of a solar flare model for the phenomenon. In the model, we have to consider a process beyond the ideal GRMHD. Especially, we focus on the special features of general relativistic plasmas around rotating black holes.

Jets are produced by young stellar objects (YSOs), by black hole binary star system “microquasars” (μQSOs), by active galactic nuclei (AGN), are associated with neutron stars and pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), and are thought responsible for the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). An understanding of these outflows must include how they are launched and collimated into jets, and how they propagate to large distances. Jets be they Poynting flux and/or kinetic flux dominated are current driven (CD) and/or Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) velocity shear driven unstable. Here I present some of the work that is leading to a better understanding of the properties required for the observed relative stability of astrophysical jets.

Jets are one of the more dramatic and visible manifestations of black hole accretion. It is becoming increasingly accepted that magnetic fields underlie the mechanism behind the launching of relativistic jets. At the same time it is now appreciated that the fundamental driving mechanism behind accretion is due to magnetohydrodynamical processes and the stresses they engender. Global disk simulations in full general relativity have begun to reveal the radial dependence of disk stresses and the intimate connections between accretion and jet-launching. This talk will review the issues involved, the recent progress that has been made, and the challenges that remain.

The matter content of relativistic jets in AGNs is dominated by a mixture of protons, electrons, and positrons. During dissipative events these particles tap a significant portion of the internal and/or kinetic energy of the jet and convert it into electromagnetic radiation. While leptons – even those with only mildly relativistic energies – can radiate efficiently, protons need to be accelerated up to energies exceeding 1016–19 eV to dissipate radiatively a significant amount of energy via either trigerring pair cascades or direct synchrotron emission. Here I review various constraints imposed on the role of hadronic non-adiabatic cooling processes in shaping the high energy spectra of blazars. It will be argued that protons, despite being efficiently accelerated and presumably playing a crucial role in jet dynamics and dissipation of the jet kinetic energy to the internal energy of electrons and positrons, are more likely to remain radiatively passive in AGN jets.

Of all possible black hole sources, the event horizon of the Galactic Center black hole, Sgr A*, subtends the largest angular scale on the sky. It is therefore a prime candidate to study and image plasma processes in strong gravity and it even allows imaging of the shadow cast by the event horizon. Recent mm-wave VLBI and radio timing observations as well as numerical GRMHD simulations now have provided several breakthroughs that put Sgr A* back into the focus. Firstly, VLBI observations have now measured the intrinsic size of Sgr A* at multiple frequencies, where the highest frequency measurements have approached the scale of the black hole shadow. Moreover, measurements of the radio variability show a clear time lag between 22 GHz and 43 GHz. The combination of size and timing measurements, allows one to actually measure the flow speed and direction of magnetized plasma at some tens of Schwarzschild radii. This data strongly support a moderately relativistic outflow, consistent with an accelerating jet model. This is compared to recent GRMHD simulation that show the presence of a moderately relativistic outflow coupled to an accretion flow Sgr A*. Further VLBI and timing observations coupled to simulations have the potential to map out the velocity profile from 5-40 Schwarzschild radii and to provide a first glimpse at the appearance of a jet-disk system near the event horizon. Future submm-VLBI experiments would even be able to directly image those processes in strong gravity and directly confirm the presence of an event horizon.

High-energy emission from blazars is thought to arise in a relativistic jet launched by a supermassive black hole. The rapid variability of the emission suggests that structure of length scale smaller than the gravitational radius of the central black hole is imprinted on the jet as it is launched, and modulates the radiation released after it has been accelerated to high Lorentz factor. We describe a mechanism which can account for the acceleration of the jet, and for the rapid variability of the radiation, based on the propagation characteristics of nonlinear waves in charge-starved, polar jets. These exhibit a delayed acceleration phase, that kicks-in when the inertia associated with the wave currents becomes important. The time structure imprinted on the jet at launch modulates the photons produced by the accelerating jet provided that the electromagnetic cascade in the black-hole magnetosphere is not prolific.

We present results of recent observations and theoretical modeling of data from black holes accreting at very low luminosities (L/LEdd ≲ 10−8). We discuss our newly developed time-dependent model for episodic ejection of relativistic plasma within a jet framework, and a successful application of this model to describe the origin of radio flares seen in Sgr A*, the Galactic center black hole. Both the observed time lags and size-frequency relationships are reproduced well by the model. We also discuss results from new Spitzer data of the stellar black hole X-ray binary system A0620–00. Complemented by long term SMARTS monitoring, these observations indicate that once the contribution from the accretion disk and the donor star are properly included, the residual mid-IR spectral energy distribution of A0620–00 is quite flat and consistent with a non-thermal origin. The results above suggest that a significant fraction of the observed spectral energy distribution originating near black holes accreting at low luminosities could result from a mildly relativistic outflow. The fact that these outflows are seen in both stellar-mass black holes as well as in supermassive black holes at the heart of AGNs strengthens our expectation that accretion and jet physics scales with mass.

Using 3D-MHD Eulerian-grid numerical simulations, we study the formation and evolution of rising magnetic towers propagating into an ambient medium. The towers are generated from a localized injection of pure magnetic energy. No rotation is imposed on the plasma. We compare the evolution of a radiatively cooling tower with an adiabatic one, and find that both bend due to pinch instabilities. Collimation is stronger in the radiative cooling case; the adiabatic tower tends to expand radially. Structural similarities are found between these towers and the millimeter scale magnetic towers produced in laboratory experiments.

In this published note I attempt to sketch my understanding of the universal working scheme of all the astrophysical jet sources, or ‘bipolar flows’, on both stellar and galactic scales, also called ‘microquasars’, and ‘quasars’. A crucial building block will be their medium: extremely relativistic e±-pair plasma performing quasi loss-free E × B-drifts through self-rammed channels, whose guiding equi-partition E- and B-fields convect the electric potential necessary for eventual single-step post-acceleration, at their terminating ‘knots’, or ‘hotspots’. The indispensible pair plasma is generated in magnetospheric reconnections of the central rotator. Already for this reason, black holes cannot serve as jet engines.

We present various instability mechanisms in the accreting black hole systems which might indicate at the connection between the accretion disk and jet. The jets observed in microquasars can have a peristent or blobby morphology. Correlated with the accretion luminosity, this might provide a link to the cyclic outbursts of the disk. Such duty-cycle type of behaviour on short timescales results from the thermal instability caused by the radiation pressure domination. The same type of instability may explain the cyclic radioactivity of the supermassive black hole systems. The somewhat longer timescales are characteristic for the instability caused by the partial hydrogen ionization. The distortions of the jet direction and complex morphology of the sources can be caused by precession of the disk-jet axis.

Jets can contribute to the spectra of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the radio through the γ-ray bands; thus understanding their physics is key for interpreting the data. Recent VLBI observations suggest that jets begin to accelerate particles into power-law distributions at a point offset from the black hole by ~104rg, possibly via a collimation shock. Spectral fitting of simultaneous, broadband data from both XRBs and AGN in jet-dominated states corroborates this picture. From a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) point of view, it is natural to associate the onset of particle acceleration with the final MHD critical point in the flow, the modified fast point (MFP), where causal contact with the upstream flow is broken. In this way a standing disruption like a shock can form, and this location might vary with the physical parameters of the jet. In order to study this issue, we have used the self-similar formalism of Vlahakis & Königl (2003, hereafter VK03) to simplify the MHD equations and to derive solutions that cross the critical points. We have found a new parameter space of solutions that cross the MFP at a finite height above the disc and are relativistic, spanning a range of Lorentz factors Γ ≤ 10 (Polko et al. 2010). We present these results, as well as preliminary work connecting the relativistic formalism to the non-relativistic conditions with gravity near the base of the jets.

Systems of two very different sizescales are known to produce very high-energy (VHE) radiation in their jets: AGNs and microquasars. The produced VHE photons (Eγ ~ 1 TeV) can be absorbed by the intense environmental soft photon fields, coming from the companion star (in high mass binaries) or from the accreting material (disk+corona in AGNs), as these are the dominant sources at energies around ~(mec2)2/Eγ. Energetic pairs are created by the photon-photon annihilation, and, depending on how efficient are the competing cooling channels, the absorption can lead to a reprocessing by Inverse Compton pair-cascade development. A self-consistent modeling of these systems as gamma-ray sources should then include, along with the emission and absorption processes, a thorough treatment of the pair cascades. We discuss here on this issue, focusing on our (preliminary) results of numerical simulations devoted to a study case similar to the high-mass microquasar candidate LS 5039.

We present an extended scheme for the calculation of the profiles of emission lines from accretion disks around rotating black holes. The scheme includes disks with angular momenta which are parallel and antiparallel with respect to the black hole's angular momentum, as both configurations are assumed to be stable (King et al. 2005). Based on a Green's function approach, an arbitrary radius dependence of the disk emissivity and arbitrary limb darkening laws can be easily taken into account, while the amount of precomputed data is significantly reduced with respect to other available models. We discuss line shapes for such disks and present a code for modelling observational data with this scheme in X-ray data analysis programs. A detailed discussion will soon be presented in a forthcoming paper (Dauser et al. 2010).
