Ladies and Gentlemen, as Deputy Mayor of The Hague, I am glad that this esteemed panel will discuss the promise of cities in relation to international law. As a representative of the international city of peace and justice, this subject is of course close to my heart.
This panel was convened at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2020, with opening remarks by Catherine Amirfar, President of the American Society of International Law, and Saskia Bruines, Deputy Mayor of The Hague. The convener and moderator, Janne E. Nijman, Chair of the Executive Board and Academic Director of the T.M.C. Asser Institute for International and European Law (The Hague, The Netherlands), gave brief opening remarks and introduced the Plenary and the panelists: Robert Lewis-Lettington of UN-Habitat (Kenya); Helmut Aust of the Freie Universität, Berlin; Mauricio Rodas, former Mayor of Quito and current Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and former Co-President of United Cities and Local Governments Organization; and Penny Abeywardena of the New York City Mayor's Office of International Affairs.
