Hollow casts are advantageous because they require less casting material and are, therefore, economical. They are also light weight and can be made in a variety of materials including plaster or resins. Although hollow casts can be produced simply and economically using plaster, the fragility of the final product speaks strongly against the use of this medium. Resinous casting compounds require somewhat greater effort but the durability of the casts makes them superior to plaster casts in all respects.
