In this paper, based on the basis composed of two sets of splines with distinct local supports, cubic spline quasi-interpolating operators are reviewed on nonuniform type-2 triangulation. The variation diminishing operator is defined by discrete linear functionals based on a fixed number of triangular mesh-points, which can reproduce any polynomial of nearly best degrees. And by means of the modulus of continuity, the estimation of the operator approximating a real sufficiently smooth function is reviewed as well. Moreover, the derivatives of the nearly optimal variation diminishing operator can approximate that of the real sufficiently smooth function uniformly over quasi-uniform type-2 triangulation. And then the convergence results are worked out.

In this article we consider the application of Schwarz-type domain decomposition preconditioners to the discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. To discretize this system of conservation laws, we exploit the (adjoint consistent) symmetric version of the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element method. To define the necessary coarse-level solver required for the definition of the proposed preconditioner, we exploit ideas from composite finite element methods, which allow for the definition of finite element schemes on general meshes consisting of polygonal (agglomerated) elements. The practical performance of the proposed preconditioner is demonstrated for a series of viscous test cases in both two- and three-dimensions.

In this paper, we have proposed a numerical method for Singularly Perturbed Boundary Value Problems (SPBVPs) of convection-diffusion type of third order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) in which the SPBVP is reduced into a weakly coupled system of two ODEs subject to suitable initial and boundary conditions. The numerical method combines boundary value technique, asymptotic expansion approximation, shooting method and finite difference scheme. In order to get a numerical solution for the derivative of the solution, the domain is divided into two regions namely inner region and outer region. The shooting method is applied to the inner region while standard finite difference scheme (FD) is applied for the outer region. Necessary error estimates are derived for the method. Computational efficiency and accuracy are verified through numerical examples. The method is easy to implement and suitable for parallel computing.

We present quantitative studies of transfer operators between finite element spaces associated with unrelated meshes. Several local approximations of the global L2-orthogonal projection are reviewed and evaluated computationally. The numerical studies in 3D provide the first estimates of the quantitative differences between a range of transfer operators between non-nested finite element spaces. We consider the standard finite element interpolation, Clément’s quasi-interpolation with different local polynomial degrees, the global L2-orthogonal projection, a local L2-quasi-projection via a discrete inner product, and a pseudo-L2-projection defined by a Petrov-Galerkin variational equation with a discontinuous test space. Understanding their qualitative and quantitative behaviors in this computational way is interesting per se; it could also be relevant in the context of discretization and solution techniques which make use of different non-nested meshes. It turns out that the pseudo-L2-projection approximates the actual L2-orthogonal projection best. The obtained results seem to be largely independent of the underlying computational domain; this is demonstrated by four examples (ball, cylinder, half torus and Stanford Bunny).

In this paper, we present and analyze a single interval Legendre-Gauss spectral collocation method for solving the second order nonlinear delay differential equations with variable delays. We also propose a novel algorithm for the single interval scheme and apply it to the multiple interval scheme for more efficient implementation. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the high accuracy of the proposed methods.

In this paper, a fitted Numerov method is constructed for a class of singularly perturbed one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations with a small negative shift in the temporal variable. Similar boundary value problems are associated with a furnace used to process a metal sheet in control theory. Here, the study focuses on the effect of shift on the boundary layer behavior of the solution via finite difference approach. When the shift parameter is smaller than the perturbation parameter, the shifted term is expanded in Taylor series and an exponentially fitted tridiagonal finite difference scheme is developed. The proposed finite difference scheme is unconditionally stable. When the shift parameter is larger than the perturbation parameter, a special type of mesh is used for the temporal variable so that the shift lies on the nodal points and an exponentially fitted scheme is developed. This scheme is also unconditionally stable. The applicability of the proposed methods is demonstrated by means of two examples.

The study of vesicles, capsules and red blood cells (RBCs) under flow is a field of active research, belonging to the general problematic of fluid/structure interactions. Here, we are interested in modeling vesicles, capsules and RBCs using a boundary integral formulation, and focus on exact singularity subtractions of the kernel of the integral equations in 3D. In order to increase the precision of singular and near-singular integration, we propose here a refinement procedure in the vicinity of the pole of the Green-Oseen kernel. The refinement is performed homogeneously everywhere on the source surface in order to reuse the additional quadrature nodes when calculating boundary integrals in multiple target points. We also introduce a multi-level look-up algorithm in order to select the additional quadrature nodes in vicinity of the pole of the Green-Oseen kernel. The expected convergence rate of the proposed algorithm is of order while the computational complexity is of order , where N is the number of degrees of freedom used for surface discretization. Several numerical tests are presented to demonstrate the convergence and the efficiency of the method.

A simple method is proposed for constructing fourth-degree cubature formulae over general product regions with no symmetric assumptions. The cubature formulae that are constructed contain at most n2 + 7n + 3 nodes and they are likely the first kind of fourth-degree cubature formulae with roughly n2 nodes for non-symmetric integrations. Moreover, two special cases are given to reduce the number of nodes further. A theoretical upper bound for minimal number of cubature nodes is also obtained.

New numerical techniques are presented for the solution of the two-dimensional time fractional evolution equation in the unit square. In these methods, Galerkin finite element is used for the spatial discretization, and, for the time stepping, new alternating direction implicit (ADI) method based on the backward Euler method combined with the first order convolution quadrature approximating the integral term are considered. The ADI Galerkin finite element method is proved to be convergent in time and in the L2 norm in space. The convergence order is 𝓞(k|ln k| + hr), where k is the temporal grid size and h is spatial grid size in the x and y directions, respectively. Numerical results are presented to support our theoretical analysis.

For the approximation in Lp-norm, we determine the weakly asymptotic orders for the simultaneous approximation errors of Sobolev classes by piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation with equidistant knots. For p = 1, ∞, we obtain its values. By these results we know that for the Sobolev classes, the approximation errors by piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation are weakly equivalent to the corresponding infinite-dimensional Kolmogorov widths. At the same time, the approximation errors of derivatives are weakly equivalent to the corresponding infinite-dimensional Kolmogorov widths.

A new numerical method based on locally modified Cartesian meshes is proposed for solving a coupled system of a fluid flow and a porous media flow. The fluid flow is modeled by the Stokes equations while the porous media flow is modeled by Darcy's law. The method is based on a Robin-Robin domain decomposition method with a Cartesian mesh with local modifications near the interface. Some computational examples are presented and discussed.

pde2path is a free and easy to use Matlab continuation/bifurcation package for elliptic systems of PDEs with arbitrary many components, on general two dimensional domains, and with rather general boundary conditions. The package is based on the FEM of the Matlab pdetoolbox, and is explained by a number of examples, including Bratu’s problem, the Schnakenberg model, Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and von Karman plate equations. These serve as templates to study new problems, for which the user has to provide, via Matlab function files, a description of the geometry, the boundary conditions, the coefficients of the PDE, and a rough initial guess of a solution. The basic algorithm is a one parameter arclength-continuation with optional bifurcation detection and branch-switching. Stability calculations, error control and mesh-handling, and some elementary time-integration for the associated parabolic problem are also supported. The continuation, branch-switching, plotting etc are performed via Matlab command-line function calls guided by the AUTO style. The software can be downloaded from www.staff.uni-oldenburg.de/hannes.uecker/pde2path, where also an online documentation of the software is provided such that in this paper we focus more on the mathematics and the example systems.

We present generalized and unified families of (2n)-point and (2n — 1)-point p-ary interpolating subdivision schemes originated from Lagrange polynomial for any integers n ≥ 2 and p ≥ 3. Almost all existing even-point and odd-point interpolating schemes of lower and higher arity belong to this family of schemes. We also present tensor product version of generalized and unified families of schemes. Moreover error bounds between limit curves and control polygons of schemes are also calculated. It has been observed that error bounds decrease when complexity of the scheme decrease and vice versa. Furthermore, error bounds decrease with the increase of arity of the schemes. We also observe that in general the continuity of interpolating scheme do not increase by increasing complexity and arity of the scheme.

In this paper, we study to use nonlocal bounded variation (NLBV) techniques to decompose an image intensity into the illumination and reflectance components. By considering spatial smoothness of the illumination component and nonlocal total variation (NLTV) of the reflectance component in the decomposition framework, an energy functional is constructed. We establish the theoretical results of the space of NLBV functions such as lower semicontinuity, approximation and compactness. These essential properties of NLBV functions are important tools to show the existence of solution of the proposed energy functional. Experimental results on both grey-level and color images are shown to illustrate the usefulness of the nonlocal total variation image decomposition model, and demonstrate the performance of the proposed method is better than the other testing methods.

We develop the immersed interface method (IIM) to simulate a two-fluid flow of two immiscible fluids with different density and viscosity. Due to the surface tension and the discontinuous fluid properties, the two-fluid flow has nonsmooth velocity and discontinuous pressure across the moving sharp interface separating the two fluids. The IIM computes the flow on a fixed Cartesian grid by incorporating into numerical schemes the necessary jump conditions induced by the interface. We present how to compute these necessary jump conditions from the analytical principal jump conditions derived in [Xu, DCDS, Supplement 2009, pp. 838-845]. We test our method on some canonical two-fluid flows. The results demonstrate that the method can handle large density and viscosity ratios, is second-order accurate in the infinity norm, and conserves mass inside a closed interface.

In this paper we present a first supercloseness analysis for higher-order Galerkin FEM applied to a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem. Using a solution decomposition and a special representation of our finite element space, we are able to prove a supercloseness property of p + 1/4 in the energy norm where the polynomial order p ≥ 3 is odd.

We study the enhancement of accuracy, by means of the convolution post-processing technique, for discontinuous Galerkin(DG) approximations to hyperbolic problems. Previous investigations have focused on the superconvergence obtained by this technique for elliptic, time-dependent hyperbolic and convection-diffusion problems. In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to extend this post-processing technique to the hyperbolic problems written as the Friedrichs’ systems by using an upwind-like DG method. We prove that the L2-error of the DG solution is of order k+1/2, and further the post-processed DG solution is of order 2k+1 if Qk-polynomials are used. The key element of our analysis is to derive the (2k+1)-order negative norm error estimate. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the theoretical analysis.

This paper presents a method for solving the linear semi-implicit immersed boundary equations which avoids the severe time step restriction presented by explicit-time methods. The Lagrangian variables are eliminated via a Schur complement to form a purely Eulerian saddle point system, which is preconditioned by a projection operator and then solved by a Krylov subspace method. From the viewpoint of projection methods, we derive an ideal preconditioner for the saddle point problem and compare the efficiency of a number of simpler preconditioners that approximate this perfect one. For low Reynolds number and high stiffness, one particular projection preconditioner yields an efficiency improvement of the explicit IB method by a factor around thirty. Substantial speed-ups over explicit-time method are achieved for Reynolds number below 100. This speedup increases as the Eulerian grid size and/or the Reynolds number are further reduced.

In this paper, a finite element method is proposed to investigate multiple solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for an unsteady, laminar, incompressible flow in a porous expanding channel. Dual or triple solutions for the fixed values of the wall suction Reynolds number R and the expansion ratio α are obtained numerically. The computed multiple solutions for the symmetric flow are validated by comparing them with approximate analytic solutions obtained by the similarity transformation and homotopy analysis method. Unlike previous works, our method deals with the Navier-Stokes equations directly and thus has no similarity and other restrictions as in previous works. Finally we use the method to study multiple solutions for three cases of the asymmetric flow (which has not been studied before using the similarity-type techniques).
