1. On 1 January 1986, the island of Aruba, which used to be part of the Netherlands Antilles, attained internal autonomy as a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Consequently the Kingdom now consists of three countries: the Netherlands (the Kingdom in Europe), the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
