Suspension Processing of SiC Whisker-Reinforced Composites

Abstract

Suspension processing was used to prepare Al2O3 /SiC whisker and Al2O3/ZrO2 /SiC whisker compacts with high green density, fine pore sizes, and homogeneous microstructure. Procedures for optimizing particle/whisker co-dispersion and subsequent consolidation by slip casting are reviewed. Compacts prepared by slip casting showed significantly higher sintered densities compared to dry-pressed samples.
