Novel high flux polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by incorporating different amounts of graphene oxide (GO) sheets to PES as nanofillers. The membranes were prepared from solutions in 50/50 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-diethylphosphate/N,N-dimethyl formamide. It was observed that the water permeance increased from 550 to 800 L m-2h-1bar-1, with incorporation of 1 wt% GO, keeping a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of approximately 32-34 kg mol-1. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy images of GO/PES membranes showed the formation of ultrathin selective layer unlike pristine membranes. Contact angle measurements confirmed the increase of hydrophilicity, by increasing the GO concentration. The rejection of humic acid and bovine serum albumin was demonstrated. The mechanical properties were improved, compared with the pristine membranes. The performance was just above the trade-off relationship between permeance and separation factor for PES membranes reported in the literature.

Recent work in the development of glass-ceramic scintillators at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has focused on modifying formulation of the oxide host glass and scintillating crystal phase, secondary heat treatment (ceramization) schedule, and processing improvement to ensure optical quality. These efforts have yielded considerable performance improvements to glass-ceramic scintillators, and have made them among the most promising composite scintillators under investigation. However, these materials still fall short of current commercially-available single crystal scintillators, and so new avenues must be pursued for continued improvements. The present investigation uses predictive simulations to inform the materials selection and process design for high refractive index layers to improve light extraction from the scintillator, and increased light output via bulk or surface plasmon interactions.

The majority of improvements to LIB technology have come through the development of new novel cathode materials. One promising cathode material is Li2FeSiO4 (LFS), desirable for its low cost and high theoretical capacity. However, the ionic conduction and transport mechanisms within this material are still not well understood, and require further investigation to improve upon cycling rate performance. To this end combined measurements of XRD & XANES have been performed in operando on LFS during electrochemical cycling, i.e. at selected electrochemical states of charge during the formation cycle the crystalline structure and the transition metal oxidation state as well as the site symmetry were characterized via the two aforementioned techniques. These in operando measurements expose once more a charging rate-dependent phase evolution during the formation cycle, which can be well characterized using a simplified equivalent circuit analogue.

In this work, we successfully synthesized rhombic dodecahedral Cu2O nanocrystals with a size of 300 – 400 nm using a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared photocatalyst with narrow bandgap is activated using low power visible LED light sources and shows high efficiency in degrading aromatic organic compounds including toluene and chlorobenzene. The OH substitution leads to oxidation/ionization potential drops while the nature of the p-type Cu2O contributes to an effective single electron transfer reaction.

This work shows the electrochemical study of nickel (Ni) and TiC/Ni composite immersed in synthetic seawater. In order to characterize the corrosion process, polarization curves (PC) were carried out. All electrochemical measures were made under static conditions, room temperature, atmospheric pressure and 24 hours exposure time. An electrochemical cell with a typical three-electrode array was used. Effect of TiC as reinforcement into the Ni matrix was evaluated. According PC results, it is possible to point out that the corrosion rate (CR) of the TiC/Ni composite was higher than Ni corrosion rate. The obtained results indicate that the corrosion process of both materials is of mixed type, that is to say a process of transfer of load influenced by a mechanism of mass transfer. Observations through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that mechanism of corrosion was cells of differential aeration (difference of concentration of oxygen). The corrosion morphology was localized type (pits and crevice).

Materials processing and additive manufacturing afford exciting opportunities in biomedical research, including the study of cell-material interactions. However, some of the most efficient materials for microfabrication are not wholly suitable for biological applications, require extensive post-processing or exhibit high mechanical stiffness that limits the range of applications. Conversely, materials exhibiting high cytocompatibility and low stiffness require long processing times with typically decreased spatial resolution of features. Here, we investigated the use of hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), a classic and efficient polymer for stereolithography, for oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) culture. We developed composite HDDA-polyethylene glycol acrylate hydrogels that exhibited high biocompatibility, mechanical stiffness in the range of muscle tissue, and high printing efficiency at ∼5 μm resolution.

Active inkjet materials are invoked in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. These types of multilayer assemblies contain a variety of commercially available ink formulations. It is envisioned that a dielectric SU-8 material can be used in a FET-like structure to form an interlayer between conductive silver and semi-conductive MWCNT-doped PEDOT:PSS ink layers. These printed structures may be fabricated onto a polyimide based flexible substrate, for instance. These structures are a starting point for offering valuable information on layer-on-layer printing interactions and interface problematics within a complete inkjet device fabrication.

There is a need to expand the fundamental skills in science and engineering to include innovation & entrepreneurship (I&E) skills as core competencies. To better prepare the future Nanotechnology workforce, the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez Nanotechnology Center, broadened the educational content beyond traditional skills in science and engineering. The Center, offers a rich educational program for materials and nano scientists that aims to create the next generation of knowledgeable, experienced professionals, and successful entrepreneurs, who can develop value-added innovations that can spur economic growth and continue to impact the quality of life for society. Within the educational program an Entrepreneurship Education Co-Curricular Program (EEP) incorporates I&E training into the Materials Science, Nanotechnology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) faculty and student experiences. The EEP consists of a two-year series of workshops that seek to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, including five key topics: 1) Generation of Ideas, 2) Entrepreneurial Vision, 3) Early Assessment of Ideas, 4) Identification of Opportunities, and 5) Strategic Thinking. The EEP goals, target audience, and implementation strategy, is described with an evaluation tool to assess the program’s success in developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

We demonstrate the detection of an increase in refractive index and/or thickness by specific adsorption of proteins on a plasmonic surface on a paper substrate in the Otto configuration. Propagating surface plasmon resonance is observed on a gold surface deposited onto polymer-coated papers through angular scans of reflectivity in the Otto configuration under attenuated total reflection conditions. According to a surface analysis with atomic force microscope, the gold surface roughness on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-coated paper is comparable to that of a Si wafer, leading to the achievement of protein detection. On the other hand, the propagating length of the surface plasmons is shorter than that on the Si wafer. According to an observation of the gold surface with scanning electron microscope, the gold grain size on the PVC-coated paper is smaller than that on the Si wafer. Thus, many boundaries cause a reduction in the propagating length on the PVC-coated paper.

N-terminal methacrylation of peptide MAX1, which is capable of conformational changes by variation of the pH, results in a peptide, named VK20. Increasing the reactivity of this terminal group enables further coupling reactions or chemical modifications of the peptide. However, this end group functionalization may influence the ability of conformational changes of VK20, as well as its properties. In this paper, the influence of pH on the transition between random coil and ß-sheet conformation of VK20, including the transition kinetics, were investigated. At pH values of 9 and higher, the kinetics of ß-sheet formation increased for VK20, compared to MAX1. The self-assembly into ß-sheets recognized by the formation of a physically crosslinked gel was furthermore indicated by a significant increase of G’. An increase in pH (from 9 to 9.5) led to a faster gelation of the peptide VK20. Simultaneously, G’ was increased from 460 ± 70 Pa (at pH 9) to 1520 ± 180 Pa (at pH 9.5). At the nanoscale, the gel showed a highly interconnected fibrillary network structure with uniform fibril widths of approximately 3.4 ± 0.5 nm (N=30). The recovery of the peptide conformation back to random coil resulted in the dissolution of the gel, whereby the kinetics of the recovery depended on the pH. Conclusively, the ability of MAX1 to undergo conformational changes was not affected by N-terminal methacrylation whereas the kinetics of pH-sensitive ß-sheet formations has been increased.

Flexible electronics manufacturing from functional inks is a versatile approach gaining interest from both industry and academia at an accelerated pace; towards its full development, research studies establishing connections between the inks processing conditions and final materials functionalities become necessary. In this work, we report on the relations between synthesis, continuous - flow direct writing parameters, and low energy intensity post-processing of functional TiO2 hybrid ink patterns. Such inks are printed on heat sensitive polymer substrates with typical application in dye solar cell photoelectrodes; nevertheless, their versatility spans a wide range of other applications from sensors to photocatalysts. For the ink formulation, we use an initial crystalline nanoparticle TiO2 phase that provides the main functionality of the printed films. We also add a Ti-precursor that, when post-treated, provides connecting paths for the initial phase thus forming continuous porous structures. We find that the ink’s formulation plays a pivotal role by providing the means for tuning its rheological properties (necessary for successful direct writing), the ink-substrate interactions, and the printed microstructures. We further discuss the implications of such compositional variations, introduced when adding polymeric agents, such as polyacrylic acid, on the crystallization of the Ti-organic precursor into TiO2 bridges between the nanoparticles. We finally report on the electrical properties of the printed TiO2 photoelectrodes as compared to conventionally fabricated counterparts. The design, continuous – flow direct writing, and the subsequent mild thermal-energy treatments of hybrid sol-gel based TiO2 inks may hold the key for large-scale and sustainable additive manufacturing of flexible functional components for a range of applications.

The dynamics of gas evolution during the thermal oxidation of 30% solutions of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) in Isopar-M saturated with 4.3, 8.2 and 12.0 mol/L nitric acid was investigated in open vessels in the temperature range of 70°C to 150°C. The volume of the released gases has been measured. The influence of the pre-irradiation by accelerated electrons has been determined for the thermolysis and accumulation of liquid products of TBP degradation in the system TBP-Isopar-M-HNO3. The temperature borders of oxidation processes transition to autocatalytic regime have been estimated. It has been shown, that the conditions resulting in growth of autocatalytic oxidation do not exist under heating of single-phase systems in open vessels.
