In (1) the authors introduced the idea of a syntopogenous pre-ordered space and, in (2), discussed the more general notion of a convex syntopogenous space. The former generalizes Nachbin's ‘uniform preordered space’ (4) and Singal and Lal's ‘proximity preordered space’ (7); the latter does the same for Nachbin's ‘convex topological space’ (4) and Redfield's ‘nearly uniform ordered space’ (5).

Recent papers by Atkinson and Reuter(1), Brown and Carr(5), and Barbour(2) have proved several important results concerning wave solutions of the usual deterministic model for the spatial spread of an epidemic, such as measles or influenza. In particular Atkinson and Reuter showed that non-trivial wave solutions, in a population along a line, only exist provided the contact distribution function has an exponentially bounded tail, and that the speed of propagation c must be at least some critical value c0. They constructed a solution for c > c0, which Barbour later showed to be the unique solution, modulo translation, at that speed. Brown and Carr showed that a solution was also possible at speed c0, though it has not been possible to show uniqueness at this speed.

The Mullineux map is an involutory bijection on the set of p-regular partitions of any given integer n, where a partition is called p-regular if no part of it is repeated p or more times. Many combinatorial properties of the Mullineux map make it reasonable to view this map as a p-analogue of the transposition map T on the set of all partitions.

Based on the work of Kleshchev [7], it has been shown [2, 5, 14] that the Mullineux map M has the following property.

where sgn is the sign representation of Sn. Thus, from a representation theoretic point of view as well, the Mullineux map is a p-analogue of the transposition map T. The Mullineux map plays a vital role not only in the representation theory of symmetric groups but also in other contexts. The definition of M as given in [9] is quite complicated and to study various questions involving this map it is desirable to have other descriptions. One alternative inductive description of M using the concept of good boxes in a p-regular partition was given by Kleshchev [7] and this was used by Walker to prove a result contained in Theorem 4·5 below; this work was motivated by the investigation of Schur modules. In this paper we study a third description of M based on the operator J on the set of p-regular partitions defined in [13].

We study the dynamics of non-entire transcendental meromorphic functions with a finite asymptotic value mapped after some iterations onto a pole. This situation does not appear in the case of rational or entire functions. We consider the family of non-entire functions \[ f(z)=\frac{a\exp(z^p)+b\exp(-z^p)}{c\exp(z^p)+d\exp(-z^p)} \] with this property, i.e. there exists a finite asymptotic value $\xi$ and a positive natural number $q$ such that $f^q(\xi)\,{=}\,\infty$, where $p\,{\geq}\,1$, $a,b,c,d\,{\in}\,\mathbb{C}$. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points in the Julia set with bounded trajectory is strictly greater than one. We then impose two conditions on functions from this family. If the first condition holds, then the Lebesgue measure of the Julia set is zero, but the Hausdorff dimension is equal to two. On the other hand, if a function $f$ satisfies the second condition, then the Lebesgue measure of the Julia set is positive. Finally, we describe the measurable dynamics of these functions and prove that there does not exist an invariant measure on the Julia set absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and finite on compact subsets of $\mathbb{C}$.

Solutions of Fock's equations for the self-consistent field with exchange have been carried out for Ne+4, using the EDSAC at the Mathematical Laboratory, Cambridge. The initial estimates for the calculation were made by a simplified version of a method previously suggested for interpolating atomic wave functions with respect to atomic number. This gave good estimates for Ne+4, and it is probable that estimates for Ne+3, obtained similarly, are already accurate enough for practical use. Such wave functions for Ne+3 are given. The results have application in astrophysical contexts.

We study the Selmer group of an elliptic curve over an admissible p-adic Lie extension of a number field F. We give a formula for the Akashi series attached to this module, in terms of the corresponding objects for the cyclotomic ℤp-extension and certain correction terms. This extends our earlier work [16], in particular since it applies to elliptic curves having split multiplicative reduction at some primes above p, in which case the Akashi series can have additional zeros.

This paper continues (and concludes) the mathematical analysis begun in (8) of a formal theory of viscous flow in channels with slowly curving walls. In that paper, the theory was shown to yield strict asymptotic expansions, in powers of the small curvature parameter, of exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, but the proofs were restricted to a set of Reynolds numbers and wall divergence angles that is distinctly smaller than the set on which the formal approximation is defined. In the present paper, we study in more detail a certain linear, partial differential operator TN, the invertibility of which is essential to the proofs. This operator is shown to be invertible (and the formal theory is thereby justified) on a parameter domain that is much larger than and may well be the whole of . A key step is to associate with TN a family of operators that approximate TN locally and have much simpler coefficients.

A permutation group G on a set Ω is said to be binary if, for every n ∈ ℕ and for every I, J ∈ Ωn, the n-tuples I and J are in the same G-orbit if and only if every pair of entries from I is in the same G-orbit to the corresponding pair from J. This notion arises from the investigation of the relational complexity of finite homogeneous structures.

Cherlin has conjectured that the only finite primitive binary permutation groups are the symmetric groups Sym(n) with their natural action, the groups of prime order, and the affine groups V ⋊ O(V) where V is a vector space endowed with an anisotropic quadratic form.

We prove Cherlin's conjecture, concerning binary primitive permutation groups, for those groups with socle isomorphic to PSL2(q), 2B2(q), 2G2(q) or PSU3(q). Our method uses the notion of a “strongly non-binary action”.

In an attempt to give extensions of certain results in the theory of Mac-Robert's E-function and Meijer's (G-function, the integrals

are evaluated, for positive integral values of n, in terms of Agarwal's and their numerous interesting particular cases are deduced. The scope of a further generalization of (i) and (ii), with the aid of the Mellin inversion formula, is also discussed.

It is observed that the integral (ii) provides an elegant generalization of some of the recent results of Srivastava which, in turn, incorporate a well-known formula due to Slater.

It was shown by Birkhoff ((1), p. 253) that every spherically symmetric solution of the field equations of general relativity for empty space,

may be reduced, by suitable coordinate transformations, to the static Schwarzschild form:

where m is a constant. This result is known as Birkhoff's theorem and excludes the possibility of spherically symmetric gravitational radiation. Different proofs of the theorem have been given by Eiesland(2), Tolman(3), and Bonnor ((4), p. 167).

All manifolds in this paper are piecewise linear (or smooth if one wishes).

Let S be a (jointly continuous) topological semigroup, C(S) the set of all bounded complex-valued continuous functions on S and M (S) the set of all bounded complex-valued Radon measures on S. Let (S) (or (S)) be the set of all µ ∈ M (S) such that x → │µ│ (x-1C) (or x → │µ│(Cx-1), respectively) is a continuous mapping of S into ℝ, for every compact set C ⊆ S, and . (Here │µ│ denotes the measure arising from the total variation of µ and the sets x-1C and Cx-1 are as defined in Section 2.) When S is locally compact the set Ma(S) was studied by A. C. and J. W. Baker in (1) and (2), by Sleijpen in (14), (15) and (16) and by us in (3). In this paper we show that some of the results of (1), (2), (14) and (15) remain valid for certain non-locally compact S and raise some new problems for such S.

If V is a symplectic space, each affine contact transformation is shown to define an automorphism of a certain algebra of Schwartz functions on V. This automorphism turns out to be a generalized inner automorphism and allows one to associate to the contact transformation a tempered distribution which can be found explicitly. It is shown by means of various examples that these distributions contain much information about the corresponding quantized system. For example the energy levels and stationary states of the harmonic oscillator can be deduced from the general formulae. Generalizations to other locally compact abelian groups V are described. Some connections with the theory of Fourier integral operators and with the characters of certain projective representations are also outlined.

The method described gives the differential energy distribution curve directly from readings of a galvanometer and a voltmeter. When adjusted, the arrangement is convenient in operation and very good “resolution” can be obtained. The existence of a maximum frequency of secondary electrons at a finite small energy has been established, and its position is shown to be independent of the energy of the primary beam over a fairly wide range. The effect of deposition of tungsten on a clean copper surface is studied with respect to the secondary emission properties of the surface. From these experiments some interesting conclusions concerning the mechanism of the process may be drawn.

A general theory of the interaction of two charged identical colloidal particles of arbitrary shape is developed. An expression for the Helmholtz free energy of the electric double layers is obtained by the methods of statistical mechanics. The condition that there is equilibrium between the ions adsorbed on the surfaces of the colloidal particles and those dissolved in the dispersion medium is accounted for by requiring that the free energy of the whole system be a minimum with respect to variation of the ionic density on the surfaces.

The theory presented here is a further development of the work of Verwey and Overbeek. The conclusions of this paper are that in dilute sols, to which the present investigations are restricted, the results of these authors require extension in two directions. First, there is a correction to the mutual energy of two particles, due to the Coulomb interaction of the ions in the bulk of the solution. Secondly, no special assumption concerning the relation between the surface potential (or charge) and interparticle separation need be introduced. The equations set up to determine the free energy of interaction at the same time yield the ‘adsorption isotherm’ for the ion type which is common to the solution and the surface of the particle.

Let q ≥ 3, 2 ≤ r ≤ φ(q) and a1, . . ., ar be distinct residue classes modulo q that are relatively prime to q. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) and the Linear Independence Hypothesis (LI), M. Rubinstein and P. Sarnak [11] showed that the vector-valued function Eq;a1, . . ., ar(x) = (E(x;q,a1), . . ., E(x;q,ar)), where , has a limiting distribution μq;a1, . . ., ar which is absolutely continuous on . Furthermore, they proved that for r fixed, μq;a1, . . ., ar tends to a multidimensional Gaussian as q → ∞. In the present paper, we determine the exact rate of this convergence, and investigate the asymptotic behavior of the large deviations of μq;a1, . . ., ar.
