Technological Innovation Research in China and India: A Bibliometric Analysis for the Period 1991–2015

Abstract

Although a substantial literature on the management of technological innovation exists, several scholars argue that much of this research has been rooted in Western contexts, where key assumptions are very different from those in emerging economies. Building on this viewpoint, we investigate the current state of knowledge on technological innovation in two of the largest and fastest growing emerging economies: China and India. We undertook a bibliometric analysis of author keywords and combined different quantitative approaches – frequency analysis, cluster analysis, and co-word analysis – to review 162 articles on technological innovation published about China and India for the period 1991–2015. From the analyses, the trends in technological innovation research in the two countries and the dominant themes of discussion were identified. These themes were further classified into eight sub-themes. Our key findings indicate a near absence of research on the management of technological innovation based on India, limited volume of research on indigenous aspects of innovation, and a lack of theory-building based on these countries’ contexts. Several suggestions for future research are offered based on the gaps identified.

यद्यपि तकनीकी नवाचार पर काफी शोध साहित्य उपलब्ध है, कई विद्वानों का यह मत है की अधिकतर शोध पाश्चात्य सन्दर्भ पर केंद्रित हैं जहां की धारणाएं अर्थव्यवस्थाओं से बहुत भिन्न हैं. इस विचार के आधार पर हमने विश्व की तीव्रतम दर पर विकसित हो रही दो अर्थव्यवस्थाओं - चीन एवं भारत के वर्तमान में तकनीकी नवाचार के ज्ञान का अनुसंधान किया है. हमने शोधकर्ता सूचक शब्दों का ग्रंथ-मापीय (बिब्लियोमेट्रिक) अन्वेषण किया और आवृत्ति विश्लेषण, गुल्म विश्लेषण, व सह-शब्द विश्लेषण जैसी संख्यात्मक परिपाटियों का प्रयोग व भारत के तकनीकी नवाचार पर 1991 से 2015 के बीच छपे 162 शोधपत्रों का समीक्षण किया. इस विश्लेषण से दोनों देशों में तकनीकी नवाचार की प्रचलित प्रबल विषय वस्तु पहचानी गयी. इन विषयवस्तुओं को पुनः आठ उप-विषयवस्तुओं में विभक्त किया गया. हमारे अनुसंधान के निष्कर्ष भारत में तकनीकी नवाचार प्रबंधन के शून्यमनस्कता के संकेत देते हैं. साथ ही हमारे परिणाम नवाचार के स्वदेशीय पहलुओं पर सीमित शोध, और इन देशों के सन्दर्भ में सिद्धांत-निर्माण के अभाव को दर्शाते हैं. हमने भविष्य में शोध के लिए कई सुझाव दिए हैं.

Embora exista uma literatura substancial sobre o gerenciamento da inovação tecnológica, vários estudiosos argumentam que grande parte dessa pesquisa foi enraizada em contextos ocidentais, em que premissas fundamentais são muito diferentes daquelas de economias emergentes. Com base neste ponto de vista, investigamos o estado atual do conhecimento sobre inovação tecnológica em duas das economias emergentes maiores e de mais rápido crescimento: China e Índia. Realizamos uma análise bibliométrica das palavras-chave do autor e combinamos diferentes abordagens quantitativas - análise de frequência, análise de cluster e análise de palavras - para revisar 162 artigos sobre inovação tecnológica publicados sobre a China e a Índia no período 1991–2015. A partir das análises, foram identificadas as tendências da pesquisa em inovação tecnológica nos dois países e os temas dominantes de discussão. Esses temas foram posteriormente classificados em oito subtemas. Nossas principais descobertas indicam uma quase ausência de pesquisa sobre a gestão da inovação tecnológica baseada na Índia, volume limitado de pesquisas sobre os aspectos naturais da inovação e uma falta de construção de teoria com base nos contextos desses países. Várias sugestões para pesquisas futuras são oferecidas com base nas lacunas identificadas.

Несмотря на то, что существует значительная научная литература по управлению технологическими инновациями, некоторые ученые утверждают, что большая часть этих исследований уходит корнями в западные страны, где ключевые предпосылки сильно отличаются от тех, которые существуют в странах с развивающимся рынком. Отталкиваясь от этой точки зрения, мы изучаем текущее состояние знаний о технологических инновациях в двух крупнейших и наиболее быстро растущих странах: Китае и Индии. Мы провели библиометрический анализ ключевых слов с помощью разных количественных методов исследования – частотного анализа, кластерного анализа и морфологического анализа – для обзора 162 статей о технологических инновациях, которые были опубликованы о Китае и Индии в период 1991–2015 годов. На основании нашего анализа, мы определили тенденции в исследованиях технологических инноваций и главные темы для обсуждения в этих двух странах. Эти темы были далее разделены на восемь подтем. Наши ключевые выводы свидетельствуют о почти полном отсутствии исследований по управлению технологическими инновациями в Индии, об ограниченном объеме исследований, посвященных исконным аспектам инноваций, а также об отсутствии теории, которая была бы основана на контексте этих стран. На основе выявленных пробелов, делается несколько предложений для направления будущих исследований.

Aunque existe una literatura sustancial en la gestión de la innovación tecnológica, muchos académicos sostienen que mucha parte de esta investigación ha tenido sus raíces en los contextos occidentales donde los supuestos clave son muy diferentes a los de las economías emergentes. Partiendo de este punto de vista, investigamos el estado actual del conocimiento sobre la innovación tecnológica en dos de las más grandes y de más rápido crecimiento economías emergentes: China e India. Realizamos un análisis bibliométrico de las palabras clave de los autores y combinamos diferentes enfoques cuantitativos -análisis de frecuencia, análisis de clúster, y análisis de recurrencia de palabras- para revisar 162 artículos sobre innovación tecnológica publicados sobre China e India en el período 1991–2015. A partir de los análisis, las tendencias en la investigación sobre innovación tecnológica en los países y los temas dominantes de la discusión fueron identificados. Estos temas fueron clasificados además en ocho sub-temas. Nuestros hallazgos clave indican una casi ausencia en investigación sobre la gestión de innovación tecnológica basada en China, un limitado volumen de investigación en aspectos autóctonos de innovación, y una falta de construcción teórica con base en los contextos de estos países. Se ofrecen varias sugerencias para futuras investigaciones basadas en las brechas identificadas.
