How Business Model Designs Influence Firm Growth in a Transforming Economy: A Configurational Perspective

Abstract

This study adopts a configurational perspective to examine how business model designs and contextual factors in transforming economies combine to create value. We investigate configurations of efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business model designs, corporate ownership, development stage, and external regulatory volatility associated with high growth in a transforming economy. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of Chinese firms, we find five solutions associated with superior growth, suggesting that the effective configurations of business model designs vary in different contexts. Our study offers a holistic understanding of the relationship between business model designs and firm growth, and yields useful insights for business model designs for practitioners.

本研究采用构型视角,研究在转型经济背景下企业如何通过商业模式设计与情境因素的组合来创造价值。我们探讨在转型经济中,企业如何对多因素——效率型与新颖型商业模式、公司所有权、发展阶段以及外部监管波动性——进行配置组合,从而获得卓越成长。通过对中国企业进行模糊集定性比较分析,我们发现了带来企业高速成长的五个组合解决方案,并指出在不同情境下,商业模式设计的有效配置会有所不同。本研究提供了对商业模式设计与企业成长之间关系的整体理解,并为企业实践提供了有益的启示。

Аннотация

В данном исследовании используется конфигурационный подход для изучения того, каким образом структура модели предпринимательской деятельности и контекстуальные факторы в переходной экономике сочетаются для увеличения добавленной стоимости. Мы исследуем конфигурации моделей предпринимательской деятельности, ориентированных на эффективность и новизну, корпоративную собственность, уровень развития и нестабильность внешнего регулирования, которые связаны с высокими темпами роста в переходной экономике. На основе качественного сравнительного анализа нечетких множеств с использованием данных из китайских компаний, мы обнаруживаем пять вариантов, связанных с опережающим развитием, которые дают основания предполагать, что эффективные конфигурации моделей предпринимательской деятельности отличаются в разных контекстах. Наше исследование предоставляет целостное понимание взаимосвязи между структурой бизнес-модели и развитием компании, а также предлагает специалистам в сфере практической деятельности полезные идеи для разработки бизнес-моделей.

Resumen

Este estudio adopta una perspectiva configuracional para examinar cómo los diseños de modelos de negocio y los factores contextuales en las economías en transformación se combinan para crear valor. Investigamos las configuraciones de los diseños de modelos de negocio centrados en la eficiencia y en la novedad, la propiedad corporativa, la etapa de desarrollo, y la volatilidad regulatoria externa que están asociadas con alto crecimiento en una economía en transformación. Usando un análisis comparativo de conjuntos difusos de empresas chinas, encontramos cinco soluciones asociadas con crecimiento superior, lo cual indica que las configuraciones efectivas de los diseños de modelo de negocios varían en diferentes contextos. Nuestro estudio ofrece un entendimiento holístico de la relación entre diseños de modelos de negocios y crecimiento de las empresas y arroja aportes útiles para los diseños de modelos de negocio para los profesionales.
