1. Campbell's contribution on cognition and language development assumed a great deal of familiarity with the psychological and philosophical literatures that impinge on the focus of the chapter, and all my students failed to grasp much of this chapter's content. Similarly, Suppes et al. discuss probabilistic developmental models of a single child's language development, comparing a stage and incremental model. Without formal preparation in probability theory, which linguistics students typically lack, the thrust of this chapter is lost entirely.
