page 240 note 1 According to the Burmese, Buddha was born in the year 68, and died in the year 148, of an era founded by ‘Eetzana’ or ‘Einzana’, i.e. Añjana, the maternal grandfather of Buddha. There is no good reason for regarding this era as anything but a late invention. Besides, it would not help in any case: because we can only fix a starting-point for it by reckoning back from the death of Buddha, which is the point to be determined.
