1 It would have been better to divide the Introduction into two distinct parts and make “Literatures; the modern period” a separate chapter; thus the repetitious and misleading subheadings: Hindī, Bengalī, etc., could be avoided.
2 It would be better to say “of India” or “of the Indian sub-continent” than “of South Asia”, since the book does not deal at all, for instance, with Sinhalese literature.
3 This chapter is very poorly documented and quotations are usually not identified.
4 It should be Pūrva-mīmāṃsā (p. 2), Kauṭilya (p. 86), Mithilā (p. 157), etc.
