page 884 note 1 Of the passages given under Attan in P.D. we have to regard as “dogmatic” only S. iv, 400, and perhaps ii, 17 (where read attā na me ti for attānam eti), and iii, 135. All other references have to be removed from this category.
page 885 note 1 I wish to change the somewhat misdirected translation in P.D. as “lover of soul” to “self-respecting, self-centred”. The reference A. ii, 21, at that passage is wrong (where attha-kāma, ought to be read instead, as at S. i, 140). Ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ “love of Self” is peculiar to the Upanishads, cf. especially Bṛhadāraṇyaka Up. 2, 4.
