The intertidal crabs Neohelice granulata and Cyrtograpsus angulatus are common on the south-west Atlantic coast but they rarely share the same microhabitat. They are similar in size and in several life history traits which promote competition. Neohelice granulata is the dominant species in intertidal soft-sediment and salt-marsh areas from southern Brazil to northern Patagonia Argentina, where it forms extensive burrowing beds. Its burrowing activity affects sediment characteristics as well as the infaunal community. When both species coexist N. granulata constrains the distribution and modifies some population characteristics and burrowing behaviour of C. angulatus. However, C. angulatus live in burrows forming dense burrowing beds in soft-bottom intertidal areas where N. granulata is absent. Where both species coexist, C. angulatus rarely constructs burrows and N. granulata clearly dominate soft-sediment areas forming conspicuous burrowing beds. This suggests that these crab species could have similar ecological roles in some effects on sediments related to burrowing activities. In this study, we experimentally compare their effects on sediment characteristics and infaunal community. The results of the experiment showed that C. angulatus modify sediment water and organic matter contents and grain size–frequency distributions similarly to N. granulata. Neither N. granulata nor C. angulatus affected the mean abundance of infaunal organisms during the experiment but their variances showed the same patterns in many cases, indicating similar effects. These results indicate that C. angulatus can modify sediment characteristics similarly to N. granulata, and has similar interactions with infaunal species.

This study was carried out in order to provide basic information on the population ecology of the crab Sesarma rectum in the Ariquindá River mangrove, Tamandaré, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The population was analysed with regard to the following aspects, in particular: the size-class frequency distribution of carapace width (CW), mean body size (CW) of males and females, morphological sexual maturity, sex-ratio, reproductive period, and recruitment. Samples were collected monthly from April 2008 through to March 2009; the crabs were collected manually, with a capture effort by one person for 30 minutes, during low tide. The specimens obtained were measured for CW, length of the propodus of males, and abdomen width of females; and the sex and ovigerous condition were noted. Altogether, we obtained 511 specimens (132 juvenile and 137 adult males, and 171 juvenile and 71 adult females, of which 32 were ovigerous). The median CW of males (16.15 mm) was significantly larger than that of females (13.82 mm) (P < 0.05). The size at morphological sexual maturity was 15.73 mm in males and 16.71 mm in females. The sex-ratio for the total of specimens analysed was 1.11:1 (male:female) (P > 0.05). The sex-ratio by size-class showed an anomalous pattern, with a greater abundance of males in the larger size-classes. The reproductive period was continuous and the highest frequency of ovigerous females was recorded in the spring and summer. The major pulse of recruitment occurred during autumn and winter, which is related to greater reproductive activity during the warmer months of the year.

Limaria hians functions as a keystone species in construction of a highly diverse biogenic habitat. An investigation to quantify the biodiversity of two L. hians beds was carried out during the winter and summer seasons at two sites on the west coast of Scotland. Cores were taken semi-randomly through 100% L. hians nest material, organisms removed, identified and enumerated. Univariate and multivariate analyses of the data were used to establish temporal and locational differences. A total of 7275 individuals were found representing 282 species from 16 phyla. Univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the species richness of the two populations, whilst multivariate analysis illustrated differences in the assemblage compositions between sites and times. This study showed that in terms of richness and diversity these beds are among the most important biogenic habitats in the UK.

This paper evaluates if the bivalve Tawera gayi from southern South America represents an opportunity to test ecological variability and environmental changes during the last 6000 years in southern South America. For this purpose, we analyse both modern and fossil (mid-to-late Holocene) T. gayi shells from Tierra del Fuego using different techniques, including taphonomy, stable isotopes, cathodoluminiscence (CL) and linear morphometrics. Taphonomic analysis shows that differences between modern and fossil shells appear best related to local variations of physical factors such as current speed, wave action and freshwater input along the non-uniform Beagle Channel coast. However, slight changes of hydraulic energy regimes throughout the Holocene cannot be ruled out. The analysis of stable isotopes on T. gayi shells indicates a mixing of oceanic waters with freshwater from precipitation, river runoff and glacier meltwater during the mid-to-late Holocene. The high depletion of δ18O at ~4400 years before present would be associated with a period of warmer temperatures, the so-called Hypsithermal. Under CL modern and fossil T. gayi shells show a well defined pattern related to the growth dynamics of the shell, which can lead to a better understanding of its biology, adding details to further palaeoenvironmental analysis. Finally, conventional metrics shows that fossil T. gayi shells are smaller and shorter than modern shells. These differences could be related to Holocene environmental changes, but here are best explained on the basis of a predator–prey relationship. This study shows that T. gayi may be a good candidate for looking at evidences of environmental changes in southern South America, and multi-proxy data are necessary to better understand the driving mechanisms of ecological variability and changes over short geological time intervals of few thousands of years.

We studied the distribution of phytoplankton and ciliate communities in relation to environmental factors at 6 stations sampled between 28 and 31 July 2006 during the summer water stratification in the Gulf of Hammamet (Tunisia, eastern Mediterranean Sea). A strong thermocline was established at 30 m, and, on average, the N/P ratio was lower than the Redfield ratio (16), suggesting a potential N limitation. The inshore location was numerically dominated by dinoflagellates (55%) represented essentially by members of the genera Protoperidinium, Gymnodinium, and cryptic Scrippsiella trochoidea and on the offshore by diatoms (68%). The phytoplankton assemblage was largely dominated by the diatoms Thalassionema nitzshioides and Rhizosolenia styliformis, while the ciliate community was numerically dominated by small taxa such as Lohmanniella oviformis (6 × 102 cells l−1) and Uronema marinum (5.50 × 102 cells l−1). The total phytoplankton abundance increased from the coastal area (5.26 × 102 ± 4.48 × 102) to the open sea (10.33 ×102 ± 28.06 × 102) and decreased from the surface to the bottom, inversely to the ciliate abundance. Total phytoplankton and abundances showed similar patterns. Total ciliate biomass decreased from the inshore (0.25 ± 0.58) to the offshore (0.06 ± 0.10) areas but increased from the surface to the bottom. The diversity index of both phytoplankton and ciliate communities showed a decrease with a coastal–open sea gradient. The relationships between phytoplankton and ciliates suggest planktonic micro-heterotrophs were implicated in the channelling of matter and energy through the microbial loop in the Gulf of Hammamet.

The patterns of decapod larvae occurrence and abundance were studied from weekly time-series data of 8 years from Stonehaven (north-east Scotland) and 4 years and 8 months from Loch Ewe (north-west Scotland). The annual cycle observed was similar in the two locations and characterized by abundance peaks, the first in spring and another in the summer, extending into autumn. During the coldest months (December to February) decapod larvae were virtually absent in the plankton. Differences in abundance and occurrence of decapod larvae between locations and the influence of temperature, salinity and chlorophyll-a in the patterns observed, were analysed by generalized least-square functions. The results showed significant differences in the abundance of decapod larvae between locations, with higher larval abundances and an earlier appearance in the plankton in Loch Ewe (west coast). In Stonehaven (east coast), from 2003 onwards, a general increasing trend in the abundance of decapod larvae was observed, related to the increasing temperatures recorded at that site. The data demonstrate the high variability of decapod larval abundance on an annual basis and the high importance of temperature and chlorophyll-a to the occurrence and abundance of decapod larvae.

Settlement is one of the critical points in the development of organisms with complex life cycles. Some marine invertebrates respond to specific cues such as substratum and conspecifics, and the larvae of species presenting gregarious settlement are characterized by a preference for settlement in patches with conspecifics over those without. An evaluation was made in the field of the effect of conspecifics density on the settlement of Petrolisthes laevigatus during two settlement seasons. The size-distribution and density were maintained constant throughout the first settlement season, while in the second year they were adjusted to match those presented in three previously identified periods during the season. The settlement rate of P. laevigatus was higher in the presence than the absence of conspecifics. There was evidence of saturation in the settlement of the higher densities, mainly at the beginning of the settlement season, when approximately 80% of the settlement occurred. We propose that gregarious settlement is an important factor in determining the distribution and abundance of P. laevigatus at different spatial scales, both within and among coastal areas, and could restrict the colonization of new areas and the recovery of populations reduced by disturbances.

Scavengers are common in marine environments and provide an essential ecosystem service, helping to return nutrients and energy contained in carrion to the system. Knowledge of the prevalence of scavenging is required to fully understand marine food webs. As most scavengers are also predators it is usually unclear what proportion of their diet is derived from carrion, and if this proportion varies in time. In this study we set out to determine whether the input of seabird or other carrion could be detected in the stable isotope composition of the shore crab (Carcinus maenas). Shore crabs were captured in the intertidal zone of the Isle of May (Scotland) before and after the peak fledging of Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica). The stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) compositions of crabs and the proposed carrion source were determined. Fifty crabs were selected (25 from before (IOM1) and 25 after the fledging period (IOM2)). IOM1 had a mean δ15N value of +13.85‰ and IOM2 a mean of +13.53‰. The mean δ13C values were –15.46‰ for IOM1 and –15.87‰ for IOM2. In contrast to our expectations, there was no evidence that shore crabs were feeding on seabird carrion following the post-fledging period of Atlantic puffins. Future sampling in autumn months following the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) breeding season may be useful in establishing if there is another route for nutrient and energy cycling between higher predators and marine scavengers at this location.

This study is the first work on the reproductive biology of lessepsian bivalve Fulvia fragilis. Monthly and bimonthly samplings were made in the period from April 2006 to October 2007, at the Bay of Tunis (northern Tunisia). From histological preparations of gonad, a gametogenic scale was drawn up based on eight stages: sexual rest; initiation of gametogenesis; advanced gametogenesis; ripe; partial spawning; advanced spawning; restoration; and spent. After examination of gonad preparations, F. fragilis appeared to be a simultaneous hermaphrodite species. Spawning was continuous all along the year, scarce in winter and with peaks during the rest of the year. The spawning peaks were positively correlated with the rise of the sea surface temperature and the nutrient availability. Furthermore, the presence of oocytes surrounded by spermatozoa in female and male follicles and in male gonoducts was observed. Self-fertilization may occur in this species. High summer mortalities probably due to the combination of vulnerability of the bivalve in response to the reproductive effort and high temperature stress were recorded. The F. fragilis reproduction strategy explains the success of its installation on the Tunisian coast.

Macroscopic maturity staging data are widely used to distinguish between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals. The implicit assumption is that these data are accurate. The accuracy of macroscopic maturity staging of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) has not been checked since the macroscopic scale was produced in 1961. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of macroscopic maturity staging of female North Sea herring by comparison to histological staging and the gonadosomatic index (GSI). Ovary samples were collected during the North Sea Herring Acoustic Survey in 2006 on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ (Scotland) and in 2007 on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ and RV ‘Johan Hjort’ (Norway). Commercial samples were also collected by Marine Scotland, Aberdeen in both years. The maturity staging error was relatively low in 2006 (21% error) but was much higher on-board FRV ‘Scotia’ (57%) and RV ‘Johan Hjort’ (47%) in 2007. There was estimated to be a 27% under-estimation of the spawning stock biomass (SSB) in 2007 due to the differences in the proportion mature but no change in SSB estimates in 2006. GSI cut-off scores, estimated by means of multinomial regression models were successfully able to separate immature females from both mature-active and recovering females; however, there was some overlap between the mature-active and recovering individuals. We conclude that an effective and low-cost means of reducing error in herring maturity studies is the combined use of a four-point macroscopic maturity scale with routinely collected GSI data, the latter acting to validate and fine tune macroscopic staging.

The nucleus diameter/cell diameter (N/C) ratio and morphological characteristics of the haemocytes of the snail Babylonia areolata were studied using microscopy. Our results revealed two major types of haemocytes, namely granulocytes and hyalinocytes. In granulocytes, the cytoplasm was purplish red with Wright's staining, but it was blue in hyalinocytes. Hyalinocytes were smaller than granulocytes and had a higher N/C ratio. The granulocytes were sub-categorized into type I granulocytes and type II granulocytes based on the shape and the number of granules. Hyalinocytes were sub-categorized into large and small hyalinocytes based on the diameter and N/C ratio. Snails with a shell length from 2.7 to 3.3 cm showed no differences in the abundance of haemocytes.

Water drift and tidal rise make the use of bonding mechanisms beneficial for small benthopelagic or interstitial marine animals. Chemical adhesives for attachment are very common in molluscs; however, only a few cephalopods have glue producing organs. The family Idiosepiidae is characterized by an epithelial adhesive organ (AO) located on the posterior part of the dorsal mantle area. Previous morphological and histological studies described three non-glandular cell types (basal, interstitial and fusiform cells) and three glandular cell types (goblet, columnar and granular cells) containing protein and carbohydrate components. However, these studies provide different information about the nomenclature and characteristics of the cell types. The present ultrastructural analyses and a 3D reconstruction of the AO of Idiosepius pygmaeus and Idiosepius biserialis therefore serve to investigate the cell distribution, the fine structure of the cells and possible interactions between the cells.We found that basal cells form a continuous cell layer along the basal membrane, overlapped by the other epithelial cells. Embedded in microvilli-covered interstitial cells the glandular cells are more or less evenly distributed within the AO. Goblet and granular cells are solitary glandular cells without conspicuous morphological characteristics, whereas the columnar cells are arranged in dense aggregations of 5–15 cells. Each columnar cell is enclosed by a narrow supporting interstitial cell which contains dense longitudinal filament strands. The secretory process of the cells in the aggregation is synchronized. Each columnar cell aggregate bears approximately two ciliated sensory fusiform cells. The fusiform cells are connected to a neuronal network, aligned along the epithelium base.The results suggest that the bonding system is affected by two secretory cell types (granular and columnar cells). Both are similar in content, synthesis and secretory process but columnar cells are embedded in a particular cell environment. It is unclear in what way this arrangement is associated with the function of the AO. The neurons in several parts of the AO point to a neuronal control of the bonding mechanism. Comparisons with the AO cells of other cephalopods provide no indications for a morphological relationship between the adhesive systems.

The taxonomy of the genus Tethya from Brazil is revised. Five species are described, four of which are new to science: Tethya maza, T. beatrizae sp. nov., T. nicoleae sp. nov., T. parvula sp. nov., and T. solangeae sp. nov. Five earlier records of Tethya from Brazil (T. aurantium, T. diploderma, T. maza, T. japonica and T. seychellensis) are re-evaluated and only T. maza is confirmed. The other previous records of Tethya from Brazil, viz., Tethya brasiliana, T. cyanae, T. ignis and T. rubra, have been recently described in detail using scanning electron microscopy and are also considered valid. An amendment to the nomenclature of micrasters is made, recognizing at least two different morphologies of each type of micraster (strongylasters types 1 and 2, tylasters types 1 and 2, and oxyasters types 1, 2 and 3). A neotype was designated for T. maza. With four new species described here and four previous records considered invalid the known diversity of Tethya in Brazil still remains nine species. However, its rate of endemism has increased from 44% to 89%.

Assessing and monitoring the environmental impact off Mar del Plata (38°S 57°W) led to the need to identify the cirratulid polychaetes. Cirratulids are indicators of moderately impacted areas or early indicators of organic contamination. Some subtidal sand patches affected by sewage discharge have high abundances of a new, rare and difficult to place species, such as Caulleriella trispina sp. nov. This species is characterized by having characters of three bitentaculate cirratulid genera, including three kinds of spines: unidentate, sub-bidentate and bidentate. The genera and their taxonomic characters are discussed as well as the need for monitoring and environmental assessments for correct identification. A key to the known species from the warm-temperate region of Argentine Cirratulidae is given.

The taxonomy of pedunculate cirripedes belonging to the genus Pollicipes has essentially remained unchanged since Charles Darwin described them in his exhaustive work on the Cirripedia. This genus includes three species of stalked barnacles: Pollicipes pollicipes in the north-eastern Atlantic, P. polymerus in the north-eastern Pacific and P. elegans in the central-eastern Pacific. However, a population genetics analysis of P. pollicipes suggested the presence of a putative cryptic species collected from the Cape Verde Islands in the central-eastern Atlantic. This study examines the morphology of these genetically divergent specimens and compares them with that of representative Atlantic samples of the biogeographically closely related P. pollicipes and with the poorly described P. elegans. Molecular data, including mitochondrial COX1 and nuclear ribosomal interspaces sequences, were obtained for all species of the genus Pollicipes. Morphological distinctiveness, diagnostic characters, congruent divergence level and monophyletic clustering, at both nuclear and mitochondrial loci support the taxonomic status of this new species, Pollicipes darwini.

Females of the new species Exrima walteri sp. nov. were found in sediment trap samples deployed over different sites of the East Pacific Rise (13°N) at 2600 m depth. Four traps were deposited during the HOPE99 cruise (1999) and recovered during the AMISTAD (1999) cruise on the research vessel ‘L'Atalante’. The new species is distinguished from congeners, E. singula Humes, 1987 and E. dolichopus Humes, 1987, by the following derived characters: first somite of the urosome with 3 (one dorsal and two lateral) stout conical extensions; distal endopodal segment on the swimming leg 4 broad. In addition, many specimens of copepodids I and lecithotrophic nauplii, identified as belonging to Dirivultidae gen. sp., were found in the samples of all sediment traps. This is the first record of copepodids I and of a nauplius of dirivultids from the Pacific Ocean. Study of type and additional material collected during different Ifremer cruises at different vent sites (HERO91, EXOMAR, PHARE and MoMARETO) required synonymy of four species of Aphotopontius Humes, 1987, Stygiopontius Humes, 1987 and Rhogobius Humes, 1987. Aphotopontius rapunculus Humes and Segonzac, 1998 is transferred to the genus Rhogobius because it possesses all presumed derived attributes of this genus: last abdominal somite with lobes at sides of anal operculum; second segment of antennal endopod elongate and slender. A new study of the type material suggests that: Aphotopontius temperatus Humes, 1997 is a synonym of A. atlanteus Humes, 1996; Stygiopontius lumiger Humes, 1989 is a synonym of S. sentifer Humes, 1987 while S. bulbisetiger Humes, 1996 is a synonym of S. pectinatus Humes, 1987. Females of the three synonymized species were found to be sub-adult females at copepodid V. Leg 6 on these specimens is one seta located dorsolaterally on the posterior part of the genital somite. This position for leg 6 is unknown for copepodid V of other siphonostomatoids whose leg 6 is located ventrally at copepodid V; the dorsolateral position is presumed derived and shared by the dirivultid genera Aphotopontius Humes, 1987 and Stygiopontius Humes, 1987. A new key to the Dirivultidae genera is presented.

The genus Opaliopsis from Brazil is revised based on three deep-water species. Opaliopsis atlantis (Clench & Turner, 1952) is confirmed as occurring in north-eastern and south-eastern localities. Opaliopsis opalina (Dall, 1927) is reported for the first time in the south-western Atlantic. A new species, Opaliopsis cearense, is described from the north-eastern Brazilian coast, and is distinguished by its large number of fine spiral cords per teleoconch whorl.

Improved understanding of the occurrence and spatio-temporal distribution of bivalve larvae holds significant benefits for ecological studies, shellfisheries management and aquaculture. Morphological methods for identification have proved difficult to develop because of the small size of these larvae and similarities in their shape and colour. Molecular methods based on DNA extraction can confirm the presence of a species in a plankton sample, but without sample sorting and individual larval analysis, provide no estimate of larval abundance and are incapable of providing an estimate of larval growth rate. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using species-specific DNA probes has the potential to resolve these issues. However, utilization of this technique is constrained by the strong autofluorescence, common in marine larvae. Here we evaluate the effect of eight different fixatives on the autofluorescence intensity of bivalve larvae using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and Cy3 filters. In addition, fifteen autofluorescence reduction treatments were evaluated and their compatibility with FISH assessed. Relative to fresh larvae, chemically fixed larvae had significantly higher autofluorescence in both filter sets. Larvae preserved by freezing at –80°C exhibited no significant increase in autofluorescence over a 3-year period. Autofluorescence levels were generally lower with the FITC filter set than the Cy3 filter set. For archived larvae preserved in modified saline ethanol and exhibiting fixative-induced autofluorescence, the autofluorescence intensity could be reduced to 20–30% with saturated Sudan Black B and to 30–40% with Chemicon™. Both of these autofluorescence reduction treatments were compatible with subsequent FISH protocols using a FITC-labelled probe.
