Suppose we are given a regular symmetric bilinear from on a finite-dimensional vector space V over a commutative field K of characteristic ≠ 2. We want to write given elements of the commutator subgroup ω(V) (of the orthogonal group O(V)) and also of the kernel of the spinorial norm ker(Θ) as (short) products of involutions and as products of commutators

The problem of finding a george joinning given points x0, x1 in a connected complete Riemannian manifold requires much more effort than determining a geodesic from initial data. Boundary value problems of this type are sometimes solved using shooting methods, which work best when good initial guesses are available expectually when x0, x1 are nearby. Galerkin methods have their drawbacks too. The situation is much more difficult with general variational problems, which is why we focus on the Riemannian case.

Our global algorithm is very simple to implement, and works well in practice, with no need for an initial guess. The proof of convergence to elementary and very carefully stated. with a view to possible generalizations latter on we have in mind the much larger class of interesting problems arising in optimal control especially from mechanical engineering.

If M2n is a cohomology CPn and P is an odd prime, let Gp be the cyclic group of order p. A Type I I0Gp action on M2n is an action with fixed point set a codimension-2 submanifold and an isolated point. A Type I I0 Gp action is standard if it is regular and the degree of the fixed codimension-2 submanifold is one. If n is odd and M2n admits a standard Gp action of Type I I0, then every Type I I0Gp action M2n is standard and so, if n is odd, CPn admits a Gp action of Type I I0 if and only if the action is standard.

Hilbert spaces of analytic functions generated by rotationally symmetric measures on disks and annuli are studied. A domination relation between function norm and weighted sums of integral means on circles is developed. The function norm and the weighted sum take the same value for a specified class of polynomials. This class can be varied according to two parameters. Parts of the construction carry over to other Banach spaces of analytic of harmonic functions. Counterexamples illuminating properties of the complex method of interpolation appear as a byproduct.

We give some explicit constructions of type III product measures with various properties, resolving some conjectures of Brown, Dooley and Lake. We also define a family of Markov odometers of type III0 and show that the associated flow is approximately transitive.

We introduce a new homology theory for infinite graphs in order to generalize some results of Willis and Woodward on translation invariant functionals. We also extend some theorems of Gerl and Gromov.

Recently, Chen defined an invariant δM of a Riemannian manifold M. Sharp inequalities for this Riemannian invariant were obtained for submanifolds in real, complex and Sasakian space forms, in terms of their mean curvature. In the present paper, we investigate certain C-totally real submanifolds of a Sasakian space form M2m+1(C)satisfying Chen's equality.

Let ξbe an SO(n)-bundle over a simple connected manifold M with a spin structure Q → M. The string class is an obstruction to h1 the structure group LSpin(n) of the loop group bundle LQ → LM to the universal central extension of LSpain(n) by the circle. We prove that the string class vanishes if and only if 1/2 the first Pontrjagin clsss of values when M is a compact simply connected homogeneous space of rank one, a simpiy connected 4 dimensional manifold or a finite product space of those manifolds. This result is deduced by using the Eclesberg spectral sequence converging to the mod p cohomology of LM whose E2-term to the Hochschild homology of the mod p cohomology algebra of M. The key to the consideration is existence of a morphism of algebras, which is injective below degree 3, from an important graded commutator algebra into the Hochschild homology of a certain graded commutative algebra.
