It is with great pleasure that I write this modest and very personal tribute for the current volume of the Journal of Plasma Physics dedicated to honor Professor José Tito da Luz Mendonça on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Modest because, most probably, I will not have enough expertise to summarize an outstanding and truly impressive career of more than 40 years in a short text. Very personal since this contribution is based on my knowledge acquired during more than 25 years of joint work at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).
