Monograptus crinitus Wood is made the type species of a new genus, Crinitograptus; a slender, nilssoni Biozone, Ludlow graptolite typified by unusual lidded thecae. Chemically isolated material from North Germany, previously placed in the genera Barrandeograptus and Pomatograptus are placed in synonymy with C. crinitus, a rare, but relatively widely recorded form. Crinitograptus crinitus is an integral part of the globally recognized Ludlow burst of evolution in the graptoloids, and it probably evolved from a nilssoni Biozone lobograptid.
