In mid-1985 the 20 metre outrigger canoe Sarimanok, built in the Southern Philippines from tropical forest materials, sailed out of Bali, Indonesia, to follow the direct east-west Indian Ocean track which the first Austronesian settlers of Madagascar may have taken.
