The structural changes in shipping since the war and the trend towards super-tankers, large bulk carriers and fast freighters is unmistakable. Fast ships are expensive and it is natural that the large investment in these ships should be balanced by increasing the number of voyages and reducing the time spent in port. In this connection radar provides a welcome aid towards faster voyages, for even in foggy weather ships equipped with radar can reach their destinations earlier.
